Questions Thread

All cadets get leave for Thanksgiving, Winter break, and spring break. They are much shorter than the average college. In addition to that, plebes get 1 base weekend pass and 1 performance weekend pass per semester.

And occasional spirit passes for games/events. (army/navy, etc). Usually not enough to go home unless close to the game.

Plus breaks over summer when not at training or cadre.

Thanksgiving is way short. (Wed eve thru Sun Eve) Winter leave starts earlier than most civvy schools.

All are apparently contingent on being in good standing. We know of one cadet denied Thanksgiving leave a while back.

In rough order of usage:

  • White over Grey- White shirt, Grey Trousers, white hat
  • As for class- Black shirt, grey trousers, Grey garrison hat
  • Gym Alpha- PT shirt, gym shorts, white socks, running shoes, windbreaker
  • ACU (not the right name)- Army Combat Uniform (class C??) Worn Thursdays and in field. And apparently to football games during blizzards and in CO.
  • Dress Grey- Grey jacket (no fancy buttons), grey pants, grey hat
  • Full Dress Grey- Fancy grey jacket, grey pants, tar bucket hat
Is our first category -- "White over Grey", shown here for Ring Weekend? http://www.flickr.com/photos/west_point/sets/72157627368617173/with/6070390982/

Also, why do some cadets have a burgundy sash belt and others a standard belt? Are the standard belts worn by the Plebes chasing the Firsties (who are wearing the burgundy sash belt?)

Yes, that is white over gray. I'm sad to see them wearing it to receive their rings. IMNSHO, someone dropped the ball. The ring ceremony is a formal event and W/G is not a formal uniform. We wore India Whites, which is the summer formal uniform. That was always the custom.

Firsties wear a red sash. The underclass wear a standard belt, or a white belt if on duty.

The 2012 class wore white/gray carrying raincoats because of the threat of rain.
Weather permitting, 2013 will be in India Whites for the Ring Ceremony.

That's why I qualify it as my not-so-humble opinion. They did the same thing for my grad parade. We looked like idiots doing the best parade of our careers in a duty uniform.

So it goes. Hopefully they're all happy after branch night.

Another one of my many questions, typically when does the "Instructions For Applicants Offered Admission" pdf file open up on the candidate portal? I'm expecting that (as well as the Dental Screening Form) to be available sometime early next year, is that safe to assume?

What do these instructions contain? Is there any way to prepare for this prior?

Also, how tough are the essays graded? Unfortunately i just read through them and found a mistake that no one caught where I should have made a word plural. I know it's not huge, but will something like that hurt a lot?

UMSA said that during the month of january they will post the instructions for those offered admission along with the dental screening form.

I have heard from my sports coach that the admissions board does scrutinize the essays fairly well, but I'm sure they pay more attention to what the essay is saying. On one of mine I had mixed up a 'their' with a 'there'. oops. haha

My nomination just got put into my candidate file today and I also have an LOA. Approximately how long should it take for my appointment to get into the mail?

I hear that the nomination goes to the admissions committee around a week before it's put online, so that your Congressperson (or staff) has a chance to personally congratulate you. If that's true, I want to say that my educated guess would be anytime soon to a week at most.

If not, then I'm sure a week or two would suffice, give or take a couple days.

My DS received an LOA at the first of September. Had his Senate interview on 10/26. The nomination letter was dated 11/4. The Appointment envelope arrived 11/12. Congratulations!

How does double-majoring work at USMA? Would double-majoring in Civil and Mechanical Engineering be possible? I don't know how different the courses for the two are, but I figured since it's in the same general area of study there shouldn't be that many extra courses needed for a double-major, as compared to say, Philosophy and Chemistry or something.

I believe double majoring in two engineering majors is referred to as suicide.

Here are the course listings for both majors, you'll notice they're both heavy majors and there's not much overlap:

I don't know about the USMA curriculum but in a standard college curriculum the differences are significant. The first two years would be mostly the same classes. The second two years would have minimal overlap of technical courses.

IIRC, it is not allowed.

quick question- im fairly new to this forum (as i will be a candidate for the class of 2017), and i keep on seeing many people refer to their son/daughter as "DS".

What exactly does DS stand for?

Dear Son, or DD for Dear Daughter

Thanks for that dean's website! Hmm... This is gonna be hard now because I want to do both.

That website is really helpful; but when looking at majors you'll notice the engineering majors have a few more required classes than non-engineers and that's because non-engineers still have to take a 3-course engineering sequence. So it kind of balances out.

Have you taken physics yet?

Its very hard to double major here in general unless you validate a number of classes. You just won't have the space in your schedule with the required classes you'll be required ot take. Mech and civil engineering together I don't think would be anywhere near possible as even the cadets just taking one of them have some of the toughest schedules. When you see people double majoring here its generally with a "softer" second major such as a language or something along those lines. Even then they're considered crazy
