Hello! I am in the process of applying for NROTC, and I was wondering what I should say in terms of ranking my schools. Out of the 5 schools I listed (it is required to put five schools) I am really only interested in attending my top three. Would it look bad if I clicked the option that says I am only interested in my #1 school or the option that says I'd only want the scholarship for my top 3 schools?
I truly want to serve, and I don't want to choose either of these if they hurt my chances, but I am really hoping to earn the scholarship for my top school.
Thank you

Here's how the process works. A board decides to award you a scholarship. Once that's done you have a scholarship. Then another board goes through the schools on your list. If the #1 school has a slot available then the scholarship will be awarded to that school. If it has no slots available, then they'll look at your #2 school, and so on. You can choose whatever you want in terms of the options you mention. I have no idea if any choice would be better than another, but you can't go wrong leaving all 5 on your list and applying to all 5. I would recommend that as it keeps your options open. Don't burn a bridge before you have to. You can always turn down a scholarship to those you don't want to attend and attempt to transfer the scholarship (which may or may not happen).

Even better, find 5 schools you WOULD be willing to attend. There is time you know.

That is true but you can request to have the scholarship transferred. My DS had his assigned to UC Berkeley then he decided to go to BC instead. It was an easy process to have it changed.

It's an easy process, as long as the schools slots are not already filled by the time you request and they process the transfer. This can be the case with schools like Villanova, University of San Diego, Notre Dame, etc. I agree with Kinnem that you should find 5 colleges that you would like to attend. Surely out of the 100+ schools with NROTC, there are 5 that you could see yourself attending. It does seem like there was a requirement back when my kids applied that they had to have an in-state school listed, if one was available. I do know that both my DD and DS put that school down, but had no interest in attending there, either. Scholarship-wise, they both already had full-tuition scholarships to that school, too, so one of the scholarships would have gone unused had they gotten it to that school, as neither could be used for room and board. Bottom line is that having more choices to give you options as to school admittance and scholarship placement is a good thing. If you only want to go to one of your top 3 schools, and having the NROTC scholarship is not the most important thing, then if you don't get a scholarship to one of those 3, then you can always enroll in NROTC as a programmer and then try to earn a scholarship there later.

Put the school you have the best chance to get into as #1. This gives you an out in case you put a reach school as #1, don't get in, and then pick a second choice that has filled up. It's much easier to get into the safety school and then change your choice if you get into your dream reach school.

#2 son put Citadel only - granted as a legacy with a provisional appointment he was guaranteed admission -

he received a 4 year scholarship and is currently embracing the suck ....
