Recruiting Shortfalls

Not sure where you received your info, but in the case of both spouses being military, they both receive single BAH. If there are dependents, they have to select which one will receive the dependent BAH, and which one keeps the single. Dual military spouses can be quite lucrative. As far as taking the civilian route job wise I can honestly say I would rather have stayed in the military than dealt with corporate America. It is the most soulless existence.
I called my son because he and I were talking about this awhile ago. He originally told me that married spouses didn’t get single BAH each.

He never read it anywhere - said he was told this.

Knowing my son, he is calculating BAH and considering looking for a JO to date/marry. ;)

Whoever told your son is putting out bad gouge. Husband and wife both military - two single BAHs. Husband and wife both military PLUS a child/dependent - One BAH with dependents + One Single BAH.

I apologize, you are 100% correct on the BAH issue. I should have checked the current policies! And I believe the only reason for shortfalls on getting new members is at least as likely as not related to medical standards, Deployments, and Substandard housing (and I understand that I am referring to single members both officer and enlisted who may not get the choice to live in the civilian sector). I am probably showing my age, but back when, single unaccompanied housing was usually so bad that junior officers and enlisted ran off to get married just to get housing.

And I will second the comment that the civilian sector is not all it's made out to be.....BUT, you can quit and leave at any time, you can not do that in the services. If you get a really crap assignment with time left on your obligated service commitment you are stuck and likely miserable. Plus, and I know this isn't really an issue with people who desire to serve, versus those doing one obligated tour and leaving (not that anything is wrong with that) is that you have to deal with deployments away from family and the very real possibility that you could be killed. I would say that in the civilian sector only law enforcement and firefighters face those risks on a routine basis.

Been the case for decades. DH and I were dual military, received single BAH each, starting in ‘82 when we were married.

Also lost both both BAHs when forced to live in Navy quarters reserved for certain jobs, essentially double rent, but oh well…the jobs were major. A military member is not paid BAH if resident in permanent military housing, makes sense.

Writing for general readership. Ol’ Retired SWO knows all this.

LOL off topic - my son got to California and got to his hotel a few days ago - spending about four months at engineer school. He called me today and complained that his hotel room he is staying in doesn’t have a kitchen sink - he can’t wash his vegetables or do his dishes. For four months.

He said he guesses he will have to use the shower for that.

I sent him the clip of Kramer preparing meals in the shower on Seinfeld.

Too bad they don’t have him in a Homewood Suites with a kitchenette in the suite.

Could try to apply for full per diem since there isn't a "full" kitchen.
