Requirement to have meeting with Officer of desired Unit

Hello all,

I was just now on the NROTC website and I read an update that I thought, one, it would be helpful to point out to others, and two, that I have a question that arises.
This is the text(NOTE: This was underneath the subtitle Navy/Nurse Applicants)--

  • For the 2018 application (Fall 2019 scholarship):
    • Applicants are highly encouraged to have their interview conducted by a staff officer at the NROTC Unit affiliated with their 1st choice school.
  • Beginning with the 2019 application window (Fall 2020 scholarship):
    • Applicants will be required to have their interview conducted by a staff officer at the NROTC Unit affiliated with their 1st choice school.

Essentially, it seems that now the Navy boards are trying to get interview reports that come from where the applicant would ideally be going, which I think is a great feature, however, it does not say anything for Marine Corps Scholarship Applicants. Should I take it as that not being applicable to the Marine Applicants and get an interview with a nearby OSO, or should I schedule an interview with a staff Officer at my 1st choice(Tulane). This is a big thing for me as one, I live in MN, which would make the commute to New Orleans for an interview something to plan way ahead for, and two, my parents are not too keen with the whole military thing, which would make planning the commute all the more difficult.

Thank you for any and all advice, wisdom, and ideas.

Have a great day

Can you provide a link to the page you are referencing? Is it in the application itself? I don't seem to find it on the NROTC web site but my eyes grow weaker in my old age.

I could understand how Marine Option might be different, but the MOI is a staff officer at the unit, so it could go either way for the Corps.

If you are applying this year you are OK, as "strongly encouraged" is not required. I'm also pretty confident that what they are requiring for the following year might fall by the wayside simply as a practical matter, as you point out... but that's just a guess on my part. In any case I'm confident the Corps is going to require that you interview with a Marine Officer, whether at the unit or elsewhere.

I'd think the interview could still be conducted virtually by the staff officer at the NROTC Unit. At least, I interpret "at the NROTC Unit" as the staff officer is from there, not the interview must physically occur there. But, that's my interpretation!

I would expect that to be correct and would go a long way to solving practical issues.

Kinnem,

To provide the link, I read it at http://www.nrotc.navy.mil/apply.html about halfway down the page underneath the section titled “Additional requirements. And my application year would be for the 2020 scholarship so it would be required, assuming it is true for Marine Corps and that the policy doesn’t give way to logistical ease.

However, according to what I remember reading, the PFT occurs either before or after the interview, so that may throw a wrench in the virtual aspect, unless one could do the two separately

Well, if they called it out for Navy/Nurse applicants then it must not apply to Marine Option applicants, otherwise they wouldn't call it out like that. DS interviewed at the District Recruiting HQ. Not sure what the standard practice currently is. In fact the PFT may be why they aren't changing it for Marine Options.

I'm also curious from the way it is written if this requirement applies to all Navy option applicants or just those applying for the Navy scholarship as a Nursing major, as I believe these scholarships are awarded separately from the others.

The way I read it, it applies to all Navy Option applicants as well as Nurse Option. Otherwise, I don't understand why it would say "Navy/Nurse" vs 'Navy Nurse".

I'm assuming you are applying for the Marine Option scholarship -- in which case is handled through the RS of your district (which includes OSO). I'm not aware of any changes and it's the logical path for those pursuing Marine Option.

Having said that, if you are interested in a particular unit, check to see if you can meet with their MOI. In the event you don't get the scholarship, it will help you in that the MOI does input on selection for reapplicants in some cases and sideload scholarships in all cases. Making that good impression early wouldn't hurt.

All of these pieces of input have been very reassuring, so thank you all for contributing to this thread. Of course, I will verify with the Officials as soon as possible but until then I will proceed as planned. Thank you all for the help!
