Restoration to 36 Companies

‘7th Heaven’ when I was there. But mascots weren’t really a thing when I was there.

... Company names:
Yawn.. every one of those is boring .....
I'm sure that there are the "official names" and then the underground "names" that appear on gray market tshirts and patches.

I seem to recall 22nd Company getting an unfortunate nickname that way in the early 80s.
If it's the same unfortunate (and non-repeatable) nickname that I remember then it was the Mid 70's actually.
If its the one I am thinking of , it was 1980-81, and involved one of Refugee and my NAPS detailers (after NAPS detail and Brigade reform). It was not one of USNA's most proud moments. (I don't recall what Company it was).

It's kinda of funny to see how Company names don't seem to stick at USNA. I attended a West Point Alumni event a few years ago, with grads ranging from 20-70+ years, and almost everyone introduced themself including their WP company name. It obviously had more meaning to them.

The operative word being “current.” Just a few years ago, 7th was the Mustangs. I have a T-shirt that says so. 😉
DS wishes they were the Mustangs as Battle Cattle is way to close to Third Herd. Of course may be moot point if he gets shotgunned to another company.

^ Hope he isn't the one who designed the AC system.. I attended my initial BGO training back in the middle of the project, and stayed in Bancroft Hall for several days. (Actually assigned to one of my Plebe Year rooms on 5-0, but that is another story that I've told on SAF before). The AC was pretty new back then, and my recollection is that it was woefully inadequate for June/July in Annapolis. .

I can certainly understand putting off the reorganization-- this will be a major disruption (and PITA) to all involved (as I am sure the cut from 36 to 30 was 20 years ago. Semper Gumby!

BTW --re-reading the message above, I realize that the rationale for cutting from 36 to 30 during the remodeling wasn't really as reasonable as it seems. First, there has never been one wing per Battalion (8 wings; 6 Battalions )** , and I do remember having a few companies that straddled different decks and wings, so if there was no reduction in Brigade strength, the original remodeling could have been accomplished by simply shuffling the location of companies /battalions. I presume that happened anyway.
** Trying to remember location of Battalion offices back in the day...I suspect they were in 1,2,5, 6, 7, and 8th wings, as the 0 deck for both 3 & 4 wings housed Commandant staff office and MainO/Visitor Rooms. Another interesting byproduct of the 90's remodeling is that the MainO/'Dant Offices were actually swapped --Main O used to be on 3rd wing side.

6th Batt O was definitely on 8-0. My youngster year room faced it and Capt. Karcher would occasionally stop by to question my choice in music and the volume. He was not a big fan of The Doors.

6 Batt was 8th wing when I was there. It was the second wing to remodeled in the 90s. 5th and 6th wing I believe went last as they had some key things like laundry and king hall entrances that had to be worked out. It took to early 2000s to renovate them all. Then they did King Hall. Mid Store went from a store to a mall during those times too.

I spent a couple years in the main shaft of 5-0, with at least two rooms right next to 2nd Battalion office. Great relief when I got to move to the backshafts !

Hard to believe they finally let that go after so many years; 19th Co. was pretty proud and contentious about it when I was there. Maybe the memory has finally faded.
Not so much of a memory fade in my eyes. I think there was a push to change it during my tenure ('16-'20) since the higher-ups thought Free 19 glorified mutiny

During BGO training this summer they mentioned class reduction by approx 50 due to remodeling in specific wings in Bancroft and the forecasting they had done to fire out where to house all offices and support staff. I doubt this is the first time this has happened in the many iterations that Bancroft has undergone.

There was always a push to change it (with threats to match). The mids just gave up fighting at some point. Someone finally decided the juice wasn't worth the squeeze anymore.

Rumor when I was there was that back in 2015 “Civilian 18” had no company officer or SEL, somehow both were gapped for an extended period of time, and so it became total anarchy with no 4/C indoctrination and people taking liberty whenever they felt like it.

Looking back, I now have doubts. Can anyone confirm?

I can confirm that that was false, they definitely had a CO.

Even when a CO was "gapped" for emergencies (I can remember at least one case) it would be filled by some officer from admissions or SEANAV or training. There are so many LTs rolling around USNA, it would be very difficult to just not have a company officer.

I know of some instances were COs where overfilled, and some LTs didn't even complete their full tour as a CO.

Now, people taking liberty whenever they felt like it is a different thing.
