Restoration to 36 Companies

I think that was (at least part of) the impetus in going from 36 to 30 (that was probably 20-25 years ago). Whole wings of Bancroft were shut down to do renovations.

Same in the '80's, but certainly some informal names ...often based upon Company culture, and current events and Company officer at the time.. Level of use also varied by the Company -we were 7th Company "Sea Dogs" but I don't anyone ever used it or identified themself by it.
Stalag 17 and Club 34 were the only widely known ones that I can remember from our day. To @Old Navy BGO 's point current events could come into play as well. I seem to recall 22nd Company getting an unfortunate nickname that way in the early 80s.

To my knowledge there are currently 30 companies. DS is on protocol team and I get some cool info. And he gets crazy time with very high up brass. Great networking and experience.

Also, while initially my DS was infuriated by the shotgun, mind you on the heels of a hell Covid year and PS, he actually ended up seeing it as a positive. Met friends he wouldn’t have otherwise. And roomies that have become his besties. Also exposure to different company culture and leadership. Positives all around.
When all was said and done it was also a positive for my nephew (‘23). Culturally the two companies were very different, and while he remains friends with people from his first company the people he will be “besties” with for life are people he might never have met without the shotgun.

If it's the same unfortunate (and non-repeatable) nickname that I remember then it was the Mid 70's actually.

I like the idea of 36 companies. Less people in each company which will help mids get to know one another better. Also gives more chance for upperclass to get leadership billets and have an opportunity to shape company culture.

Exactly what my Firstie said. More opportunities for leadership for upperclass. A good thing.

Means there will be a Papa, Quebec, and Romeo company over Plebe summer. Otherwise, business as usual. More detailers needed!

"They" didn't use to give companies nicknames and there were actually no "official" nicknames when I was a mid. No patches that could be worn on uniforms, etc. Companies did have very unofficial nicknames which appeared on thing like mugs and T shirts which were (illegally) sold by enterprising midshipmen.
For example, First Company was "Fun One" and Second Company was "Loose Deuce" which was kind of an inside joke as 2nd was anything BUT loose.
True, companies will be what the MIDN make them. Dant tried unsuccessfully to "kill" the culture of the legendary Bearsharks for a while. Dant also tried to ban EGA tie bars. Every year some senior officer tried to make the black sweater die. Some things you can't kill with regulations and restriction.

Since my time on the staff late in the 20th century, I have watched the names and company cultures change over the years. Some changes are swift, some gradual, some names linger, some evaporate. The Bearsharks were not the Bearsharks, but something very low-key. I can’t remember what catalyzed their morphing. It’s all good. 🍿🍿🍿
