Roller coaster I: Get Us (The Parents) Through Plebe Year - Class of ‘26 🎢

Just got a letter that was written on July 13. It was a mixed up letter that had a few things that sounded positive. Band, food, Rifle - kid got sharp shooter! But as it was a template letter I created, it had the question, You wish you... and DS said anywhere but here. Made me sad and worried. Is this something that I should check in with a chaplain about? Or is this just par for the course. Also said he had pink eye and a bunch of folks were sick in his company. Any advice?
Try template letters with:

Best thing I ate this week
Worst thing I ate this week
Funniest thing I saw this week
Best thing we did this week
Most surprising thing this week
Most unusual thing I learned about a classmate
What detailer impresses me the most and why

These are all easy-peasy short answers which give you some insight and makes him pause and note that not everything sucks all the time.

You have received good advice on the other things. You no longer have to go solve things for him. He will either solve it for himself or those charged with his welfare will, even as he will do for those he will one day be accountable and responsible for.

Par for the course...last PS, DS got the Hack and was in ISO for three days and missed the handover between First and Second set detailers (which should be occurring this weekend....). They also had a rash (ha) of scabies break out. Again all due to close quarters, 1000 new people bringing germs together into the soup, and of course the Plebe who may not have the best hygiene practices yet.

oh yes I remember the letter my girl said that scabies was everywhere - she had no clue what that even was!!!

OMG -- if parents called the chaplain every time a plebe thought they'd rather be somewhere other than Plebe Summer, they'd need a phone bank with about 1200 chaplains on call. Seriously, unless you think your Plebe is going to hurt /himself, don't ever call (or even think of calling) USNA..whether it be the Chaplain or someone else in the Chain of Command. This is time for your kids to stand up and grow on their own--they will be just fine, Think of all the thousands (perhaps a hundred thousand) of Plebes who made it through plebe summer before SAF , Facebook, and other on demand, real time social media existed. USNA has a vested interest in your DS/DD success --they will all come out fine even if things suck right now.

For the wristbands, this is the list as posted on FB

Edited, fastest to slowest:
1: Black
2: Silver (Grey)
3: Bronze (Brown?)
4: Blue
5: Purple
6: Green
7: White
Letter from my kid the other day (dated the 12th, received on the 18th ...... we're frickin' 30 miles away, and it took 6 days!) said he has been trying to run with the XC/Track kids, and is frustrated because he is way off the back. Noticed in the pics I've seen of him that he's wearing a brown/bronze bracelet, so in group 3.

I put a letter in his care package I sent yesterday to the effect telling him that he's been there for 2 weeks, and hasn't seriously ran in two years, so he can't expect to be in 4:40/mile shape anymore. Those kids are probably fresh out of their spring track season, and are recruited D1 athletes!! Gonna have to have a chat with him about that on Sunday when he calls. ;)

He’s also exhausted mentally and physically.

We sponsored a plebe swimmer last year who had top times in home state for event. Coach talked to plebes about expectations and impact of plebe summer/start of academic year. It took until after Christmas for the times to start coming down and approaching HS times, with regular routines established, plebe survival skills well-developed, and self-confidence returning.

In no way am I trying to hijack this thread, but have plebes started to drop? I thought it was a 3 week process, but I have heard otherwise…

There were posts on the parents FB group within a week about some that DORed and how their kid was back home.

Things might have changed a bit between when I went through PS (2016) and now, but Tango opened up around 10 days into PS and it closed around 10 days before PS ended. I never really interacted with Tango, but 3 weeks seems like a bit of a stretch. If it is obvious that a Plebe wants to leave or just had a knee jerk reaction, things can probably move a bit quicker than that. Usually, Plebes who stay longer are those who are on the fence.

I had no clue this existed! Just googled it and is caused by a mite?

Yup. Close quarters. Chaffing. Humidity. Stress. They will be fine. The human race has been dealing with this nuisance since man started to walk upright.

One of mine was a ball park ranked national level recruit in a non football-basketball sport. They would start four years at the academy.

They said the highest level of their sport was played while in high school at the club level or those levels above regular club.

once they got to the academy it was about survival and grind. The quality of the game being played not quite as sharp.

They said if they had truly been interested in their sport it would not have been the USNA they would have attended.

They were not a swimmer

My DGD has shin splints and is limping but not on crutches. We saw her in a video leading a line of injured. What do the injured (broken) plebes do while their platoon is marching or doing evolutions? And does anyone know how long it likely takes to heal from shin splints.

The broken squad still goes to all evolutions. They participate as they can, but if their chit (other services call it a profile) prohibits that particular activity, then you cheer on the sidelines. They'll walk outside the formation when marching around with and a detailer will stay with them so they don't get lost. They're usually slower than the formation. The brokens will also go to medical/physical therapy as necessary. Instead of going to PEP, most brokens will go to Swim PEP and will do calisthenics and swimming. Shin splints are variable. Everyone recovers at different rates and things like foundational running shape make a difference.

my understanding is they do what they can, sometimes in a pool to relieve the pressure, etc. and I think it depends on the severity as far as recovery time. If she spoke up right away she might be back soon, if she tried to tough it out, and potentially made it more severe it could be a bit. Good thing the call is coming up, I'm sure she'll have a good idea of when she'll be back and what she's been doing.

Thank you

Those who are assigned to pool PEP usually wish they could be back at regular PEP — it’s that hard! DD underwent pool PEP for a few days because of a stress fracture. Said it was not fun — not fun at all.

Pretty much anything related to swimming in the Navy is not a good time 😂

2nd Set of Detailers move into the Plebe Company areas today and take over their respective positions. DS is a Platoon Commander and is looking forward to today. Perhaps a recent USNA grad can explain how the 2nd set objectives differ from 1st set.
