I wore the same SDB and prescribed overcoat to the game as the mids when I was a BattO. For A-N, usually in chilly Philly:
Feet: silk or thermal sock liners, then black wool knee-highs or hiking thermal boot socks. The key is black. Emergency: the hot feet inserts for shoes. Those dress shoes have no thermal insulation from icy concrete and cold seeping up for hours.
Thermal tops and bottoms.
Secret weapon: a black thin merino or cashmere men’s v-neck sweater vest worn in the tightest fit tolerable to keep bulk under uniform down. Invisible in uniform; v-neck must be below uniform jacket opening. Since the uniform is not properly worn without the SDB jacket on, it won’t be seen. An admiral taught me that one. Keeps the core warm.
Wear the issue black gloves for formation and March On. Whip out the all-black, unadorned but toasty ones with a polartec or other technical lining once in the stands. Have a stash of the hot hands. No hands in pockets during formations.
Black earmuffs with cover. I think these may even be issued. Authorized in Navy Uni Regs. I nearly fell over when I saw this at my first Army-Navy game (notagrad), but it seems to be okay at the game. I’ve seen all kinds of crazy Navy headgear in earmuffs and headbands and Navy beanies. Bill the Goat horned earmuffs are hilarious. The prudent plebe will check with upperclass for what’s currently permissible/tolerated/overlooked. Since I too was in a duty status at the game and sat near the Brigade, I broke out my original issue navy wool watch cap, still one of the warmest I own and with a double thickness over the ears. I still use that thing, with my Navy OCS number still visible on the interior label, ancient mariner indeed.
Lip balm in a pocket.
