Roller coaster II: Get Me (The Parent) Through Plebe Year Class of ‘25 🎢

Close it out with a close-up pic of a dewy-fresh 3/c shoulder board on Comm Day, no face of course, just proof positive there are no longer 4/c at USNA as of 5/27.
Will do. DS reported they actually have the new boards. Of course they are not allowed to wear until Friday. When exactly can they wear them? Before graduation ceremony or after? DS will have to be at graduation but is not acting as an usher (as of today).

As covers tumble down from the sky.

I think it’s the first time they sight the Chapel Dome when returning to the Yard during summer training.

I’ll defer to Team OG here.

Last year, the class crest was unveiled at end of Herndon. I am guessing that didnt happen yesterday, since no one has mentioned it.

When does it normally happen?
It was unveiled last night. The Alumni Association Facebook page has some photos.

DS indicated that this was released as the final design today. I recognize that they aren't going to make 100% Mids happy, but did they forget some symbolism representing other communities?

Who designs the class crest?
Mids do. There is a Ring and Crest Officer, usually a collateral duty for one of the company officers who works with the class and does the liaison with ring and crest company. Various designs are submitted and the one chosen must be approved by chain of command. That makes sure the design is aligned in spirit and look with the usual crest parameters. Nothing that looks like it belongs to a Marvel action hero or outlaw death squad.

So this thread will be wrapping soon and transitioning to focus on 3/C year. I have thoroughly enjoyed the discussion and appreciate all the "virtual" advice provided in the last 10 months. That being said a few thoughts from our recent visit:
  • Plebes gather ALOT of stuff. I needed the entirety of the minivans cargo space to bring stuff home. DS still has a sea bag, backpack and other items that he is keeping. And he is offloading a few items to a friend in DTA. DW has the unenviable duty of sorting though the "clean" stuff and downright dirty stuff. I hope he kept the right items for summer training. DS will be on leave block 3 and will have sort through the non-clothing items when home
  • The intercessional and block 1 periods are mentally challenging for those on the Yard. While there is activity there is also a bunch of downtime. DS was in a funk yesterday (Wednesday) and when asked his reply was that he just wanted to get to the next "thing".
  • He still does not have specifics on Block 1 schedule for Protramid. Apparently there will be a brief on Sunday and he leaves Monday. I am sure that is because all focus has been on Commissioning week activities.
  • DS is still excited to be at the USNA. While there have been challenges and disappointments he is still planning on signing 2 for 7 in a year.
DS has been told to send a pic of his 3/C shoulder board tomorrow for me to post.

DS just texted that all airborne and air assult classes have been canceled due to funding. He was scheduled to go Block 3.
I have zero clue on how funding works for their training. Is it funds that USNA does not have in their budget at this time to send them?

DS heard that earlier this week from buddies who were notified. What’s your DS backup plan?

Cancellations of training due to funding can occur when:
- real-world operations and events impact the training site/ship/unit with higher-priority usage or costs
- travel dollars don’t stretch as far because of rising costs in a FY that are unexpectedly high, whether for actual transportation or per diem
- strategic re-prioritization occurs

As high-visibility and important as USNA is, it is still a shore unit and a schoolhouse. When the operating Fleet needs a cash infusion due to real world events or higher than projected costs, shore commands get told, “ok, we’re re-allocating X% of your budget. Figure it out.” Then funds are shifted around within the USNA budget, according to the federal budget regulations. There are “pots” of money, and you can’t mix them. For example, personnel pay cannot be used for aviation fuel. New construction funds can’t be used for travel airfare. Any internal re-allocations among “pots” are done in the high stratosphere, not at local unit level.

The Supe and his staff invest available dollars in must-do training first, and optional, nice to do, is the most vulnerable to trimming.
