ROTC backup plan

Does anyone know how the WP application works with ROTC? I know there is a block to check if you want to be considered. Do you still need to complete the full ROTC application as well? My DD has 2 noms and is Med and CFA qualified. She plans to reapply if she doesn’t get appointment this year but would like to have an ROTC scholarship as backup as her goal is to be an active duty Army officer.

I don’t recall DS having anything on his WP application regarding ROTC, if there was he never mentioned it. He did complete the separate AROTC application, interviewed, and his SA DODMERB was automatically applied.
Received a 4yr on the first board

There is a question on the USMA application about consideration for ROTC.

I don't think it initiates an application, but is used so that ROTC can send info. You still have to do the ROTC application.

Also on the AROTC application there is a question "Compete for Admission to USMA at West Point?"

@shock-n-awe - Congratulations!! Quick question -- I recently read that scholarship winners have to "choose and sumit to HQ Cadet Command within 30 days," is there a deadline for your DS to accept the ARTOC scholarship? If so, how does that work if he's still waiting to hear from USMA (and possible other SAs)? TIA!

Thanks, He is currently a Yuk. He did accept ROTC while waiting to hear from WP.
DS had communicated with host ROTC college admissions that he was an SA CC and that WP was his plan A. In the unlikely event that he could not report to RDay (injury or some unknown), he would be attending their college as plan B. The deposit agreed to be forfeited if not attending.
In the end, he reported to RDay as planned, and the AROTC was automatically cancelled out, and I informed the college that he would not be there in the fall. The key was open communication with them.

Thanks, @shock-n-awe! So HQ Cadet Command was understanding with the contingent AROTC Scholarship decision as well? Does it all go through the host ROTC college by that point? (Sorry, we are very new to the ROTC side of the equation!)

Cadet Command understands that they are competing with West Point for the same group of kids who want to be Army officers. Every year it is the same. Kids get Army ROTC scholarships early and accept the scholarship. A lot of those kids will go on to get into USMA and turn back their Army ROTC scholarships. That frees Cadet Command and ROTC to offer that scholarship funding to other kids who want to be Army officers. There are no losers here and nothing unexpected.
Where it gets a bit dodgy is if your kid goes beyond the 1 May 'decision date' with a civilian college. Again, Army ROTC does not get bent out of shape--but you may lose your deposit at the civilian college if your kid receives an appointment late in the game. (Perhaps the best $300 you will ever have lost.)

Also, I wouldn't refer to Army ROTC as a 'back up plan'--and I would discourage my child from thinking of it that way, too. Army ROTC is another awesome source of commissioning for young men and women who want to be Army officers. Each pathway has its own merits and challenges. It is ok for USMA to be someone's first choice--but try to think of the Army ROTC scholarship as a great 'next to first choice.'

I would bet General Miley would agree!

I totally agree that ROTC is a great option I am an OCS grad and have served with talented officers from all commissioning sources.

There is an' over the horizion' offer of ROTC scholarships that happens right around the first week in July. My son had never applied to ROTC but was offered a last minute 4 year ROTC scholarship - he had already received a 4 year Navy scholarship so he declined BUT the $400 per month vs the $275 Navy stipend was tempting.

As I recall if offered you have to accept rather quickly.

Well, we are in this scenario now! :D And, I completely agree that ROTC is a great option; my DH is ROTC grad. DS has an appointment to USMA (1st choice) and just received an ROTC 4-year to his father's alma mater (still waiting on acceptance). So excited about the choices, but want to be delicate and respectful in how we ask civilian university to be willing to hold spot (with deposit) until after basic. Suggestions? TIA!

DS didn't get into USMA on first attempt. Was offered a 3 year ROTC scholarship by cadet command (he didn't apply for he ROTC scholarship). Had he not gotten in on 2nd try, the scholarship would've kicked in. It was a win-win situation for him.

@Devoir242 They simply review the Academy candidates who were not selected. At least that's my understanding.

Thanks!! I know DD selected wants to be considered for ROTC on her WP app. She started the ROTC app but not sure if that’s complete. Like I am sure most kids in her positions she is hoping for her dream to come true and get her appointment. The wait is agonizing for sure.

Well, I'd confirm the AROTC application is complete or she is not in the running, at least via the normal route. There is still time I believe.
