ROTC Early Decision Questions

Just be sure to read those 3 yellow papers that come with your scholarship letter. I'm not sure if the Army has changed it's policy, but it appears that you can only transfer the scholarship if you're denied admission to the school you accepted it to.

That is the way that i read those papers as well.

That's always been my understanding. Nevertheless rules are made so that the occasional waiver can be granted. It ain't over 'til it's over. Still, always best to NOT apply ED.

As of last spring, you did not need to show proof of not having been accepted to a school in order to transfer a scholarship from it. The yellow paper said to include a copy of your rejection letter with your transfer request IF you had been rejected.

It is not ALWAYS best not to apply ED, it depends on the student and how much they want to attend a school, the ED applicant pool frequently enjoys a a significantly higher acceptance rate than the RD pool. In some cases when the scholarship is the priority, ED may not be appropriate, but each student should determine what is best for them. There is not one strategy that is always the best for everyone.

If you do apply ED, then you have committed yourself to attending that school, unless you are actually unable to pay the tuition without being driven into financial ruin. You cannot choose to attend another school just because you get a better offer unless you literally do not have the means to pay for the ED school. So, to say that you can't go to your #2 school is perfectly accurate. Backing out of your commitment would not be showing the integrity expected of anyone, let alone a future military officer.
(Not directed at you, OP, you obviously plan to honor your commitment).

Thanks for all your help. I'm gonna cut my list down to 3 schools (including an instate public) and hope that I will at least have the option of transferring. Have a great holiday season!

I agree. I think I added the caveat the it doesn't make sense when you want the scholarship more than the school. If you want the school more, then by all means ED can make sense. As long as one enters in with eyes wide open then ED is fine. I'm afraid though that most don't have their eyes open on this.

+1 to platypus1618. The exact verbiage on the yellow papers read:

Requests for transfer of the scholarship must be sent to this headquarters with the following:

1) A statement by the applicant stating WHY they are requesting transfer.

2) A copy of the letter of admission from the college or university where the applicant is requesting the scholarship be transferred.

3) IF the request is based on the applicant not being admitted to the school indicated on the Notification of Intent, a copy of the letter from that college or university indicating admission was denied.

My understanding of this verbiage is that a transfer request can be based upon any reason; but that reason must be fully explained to Cadet Command. HOWEVER, if the reason is based upon being denied admission to one's selected school, then Cadet Command requires that a denial letter be included with the respective transfer request.

What does seem to be required in any transfer request is the acceptance letter from the college/university that one wants to be transferred to.

Again, this is only how I interpret it

Thank you very much for clarifying this. I can definitely rest a little easier now.
