Are the type 1/2/7 based off the supscore of your testing or composite on an individual test? o_O (Applying soon here and hope it’s superscore)

- Also, I was reading about the type 1 scholarship today and am wondering how competitive is this one? What percentage of applicants get each scholarship? Those who got ROTC scholarships (or know of one that did), what type did you get and what were your stats?

Any advice on aiming for T1 scholarship would be appreciated!

For comparison, here are the stats from last year (FY'19)-- the Type 1 avg SAT = 1472, Type 2 avg SAT = 1404:
FY19 HSSP Results | SAT | ACT | GPA
Overall (2534 scholarships) |1366 | 30 | 3.78
Type 1 (284 / 11%) |1472 | 33 | 3.93
Type 2 (437 / 17%) |1404 | 31 | 3.87
Type 7 (1813 / 72%) |1342 | 29 | 3.73

AFROTC does not superstore. I received a type 1 scholarship from the February board, and my ACT single test score was a 32. This is not that exceptional compared to the many excellent candidates. PT test went well also.

I am not sure where this is stated, however the majority of consideration is given to the interview. (I have heard 75 percent.) I believe several factors contributed to a strong interview score for me.

First, overall interviewing skills. I arrived 15 minutes early to the office (was waiting in car longer than that.) Professional clothing, they said casual so I wore slacks and a collared shirt. Shook hands before, after, and on the way out the door. And then just overall confidence and communication abilities. Speech and Debate and leadership positions helped a lot with that, I was comfortable and treated the interview like a conversation. Several times I had to think for a bit before answering.

Second, having a solid resume. The interview is around an hour and 15 minutes long, and your interviewer doesn't want to hear about how you are captain of your sports team for every question. Have a variety of activities / positions to refer to so that your answer doesn't always seem the same. Personally, I was able to tie in my CAP cadet commander experience, aviation experience, search and rescue, and community service. Having a few activities / positions you are heavily involved in will allow you to easily talk for an hour without being repetitive.

Finally, know why you are there and what your goals are. When I stated I wanted to pursue aviation, he didn't just say OK and move on, we discussed the missions I would like to participate in, what airframes I was interested in, and even brought in another officer who was a pilot. He then asked if I didn't receive a pilot slot what I would want, and if none of that worked how I would feel with something I had never mentioned such as a maintenance division officer. Know the air forces goals and your goals and how they align.

Be sure to look into outside scholarships also, some will cover room and board if you look hard enough.

Best of luck!

Type 7 here 1240 SAT 24 ACT 4.0 GPA

Just to clarify, the AFROTC requirement on ACT/ SAT is an either or - you don't need to meet both numbers- just either one. For this reason you can have a less than 26 composite ACT score yet still meet the requirement from a stronger SAT Score.

Some people do markedly better on one test format than the other so if you can afford it the general recommendation is to take both.

Good luck and hope that helps.

HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLARSHIP REQUIREMENTS - Academics

  1. SAT composite of 1240 or ACT composite of 26
