Shaved Head

Can't answer for MMA but CGA is a BIG YES, even if you come with your hair cut they will sit you in the chair and cut away. Now with COVID is was a little different as they did not cut hair until after their 2 week ROM (restriction of movement).

As a plebe yes you will have your head shaved. Your class can earn the rate to have longer hair. The class of 2024 had a zero until they went home for Christmas break. When they came back they could have a 0 on the sides and a two on top, and they are working to get a 2 on the sides and a 4 on top. How fast your class gets the rates is determined on how good your class is in terms of following the plebe rules and in general doing what they are supposed to do. After recognition you will be able to have regular hair that is in Navy regulations

Don't sweat it. It is the least bothersome thing about Plebe year, or, in fact, the entire experience. As I stated in another thread, you may be getting some crappy haircuts even as an upperclassman. It isn't a big deal. Hell, I am in my 60s and still get crappy haircuts. At least I have hair. . . .

My DS bought his own clippers at KP and made good spending money giving haircuts.
Same here. Our son does a mean fade, but he gave as good or better haircuts than the barber* and the money was nice. Many a frantic cadet who needed a trim in a hurry to avoid hours knew where to find him.

(*His mom is a beauty-school dropout who cut his hair all his life. He must have picked up a few things. ;) )

Not sure how it is now, but back in the day, it wouldn't take much to be better than the barber shop. There was a rumor that the "barbers" were all on the witness protection program. They were all of Italian descent and a couple didn't ever speak English. . . . hmm. . .

why is that disappointing?
I held a distant hope haircuts wouldn't be regulated as strictly the first year like at other academies. After all, USMMA isn't necessarily for active military service. It's easy to associate a shaved-head with the street-bound crackheads who give-up personal hygiene, trimming off all their hair to focus on staying high. Grown-out hair, even a quarter-inch, gives a semblance of cleanliness. But, oh well.

That's disappointing -_-
It really isn't. My DS had the head shave in July when he reported - yes he was surprised with the new look but overall it was no big deal; it was hot, you are busy, showers were quick and quick frankly it was easy to maintain - meaning no maintenance. When he arrived home at Christmas I was amazed at the young man he had become in just a few short months - not only in appearance but in attitude and drive - and sure I prefer longer hair as does he, but there will be a time and place for it to grow back.

The low maintenance of a nearly shaved head is worth it. If you keep it short enough you don't need shampoo, no combing required, and no "hat head". Whatever one feels the negative visual impression given by the 2 and below will soon be trumped by the simplicity. As a plebe you aren't really going out anyway hardly. Plus with an all over number a fellow mid can do the maintenance, or even do it yourself.

Anything to stay out of the chair of "Shakey Jake" and "Blind Bob"

Almost 30 years later I still do a 2. The only difference is now I do it all over to hide the less than luscious spots instead of just the sides and back.

This. I always tell DH that if I survive him, I’m going with the fade. If I need hair, I’ll buy a wig.

Bit off topic but do all 4/c Midshipmen have to have their heads shaved? (male)
training staff in the past few years don't give full hair rates until recognition. Plebes have been bald since indoc, they recently got a 2 on the top 0 on the sizes...its been over half a year. hair at USMMA is for MIDN.
