I have already received an appointment and have already been medically cleared by DODMERB but I just recently injured my shoulder, and it may require surgery to to be repaired. If I have surgery now, will I be medically disqualified even though I have already received an appointment? Or should I just wait to have surgery once I’m at the academy and through indoc?

Worry about your own health first. If you are concerned reach out to your admissions counselor. I’m sure they have dealt with injured appointees before you.

Your health comes first. You need to report the injury, especially if it requires surgery. And if it does need surgery then do it. You don't want to be doing more damage to your injured shoulder. Depending on the type of surgery and the injury it's possible you might be back in shape to report.

Torn labrum...so it would be about 6-8 months

My DS was a wrestler, tore his labrum and had the surgery. You won’t be physically ready to report if you have anything similar to his situation. On the other hand, not sure you could be physically ready by skipping surgery either.

Also, I believe you are required to report the injury to DODMERB.

Sorry for the situation you are in.

You have to report the injury, both to DoDMERB and to admissions. The sooner you have the surgery the betterin order to have any chance to be healed before INDOC. Do not try to get through INDOC with a serious injury. You will make it worse. You will not have time after INDOC to have surgery. This type of injury is why you need to have a strong plan B. The most likely scenario is that Admissions will give you a medical setback to the following year. Use the time to be completely healed and to take college classes similar to what you will take your plebe year at Kings Point. Good luck.

Sorry to hear. Do not feel bad about continuing to wrestle though (as this is probably where you were injured). Your spirit, ability and athleticism are what got you the appointment, and sitting out senior year for fear of an injury as some joke about, simply does not match the drive you have evidenced by getting the appointment.

Now, to the shoulder. I would find the best surgeon you can, one who deals with high profile sports injuries, professional team doctor type surgeon, with a CV that is as long as book. Make sure the surgeon knows of or has dealt with DODMERB in the past and can structure his treatment and care and opinions in a way that you have a strong argument to pass DODMERB or receive a waiver.

On a more concerning note, DS had knee surgery a few years before USMMA, and DODMERB had no issues with it at all. Didn't even request additional back up, re-exam etc. He also had a grade 1 shoulder separation, that was non surgical, treated just with therapy and time. Both injuries were treated by the local NFL and MLB surgeon. He faced followup questions from DODMERB on the shoulder which the doctor had to address. After that was completed, approval came. A top notch surgeon is what you need, not only for the result, but also for the resulting follow up questions that may arise.

You are applying for '23 and already got an appointment? impressive. I'd recommend reacking out to your admissions officer and find out from your doc if you will be recovered by indoc, if so, I can't imagine it would be a problem. I wouldn't necessarily notify DoDMERB b/c they can be a PIA (at least for me).

A torn labrum is no joke.

All you need to do is externally rotate and abduct your shoulder and it’ll pop out. That’s how a shoulder is dislocated. At best, it’ll be a subluxation which means to pops out and then pops back in.

So which activities can your shoulder be externally rotated and abducted? Swimming is one for sure. Many obstacle course events will require your shoulder to be in an externally rotated and abducted position to successfully complete. Lat pulldowns can cause your shoulder to pop out. If it’s your throwing shoulder, then a throwing motion can cause the shoulder to pop out.

Wishing you the best with however this goes.

Report it, if its serious they'll set you back to '24 until it is healed and ready to go. You will not make it through indoctrination with a messed up shoulder, don't even think about it. Your mind and body will be broken if you even try and you'll probably never go back.
