I have received notification that I have been accepted into SLS. From what I have read in the letter & on this site - the process was very competitive to gain admission into this program. Anybody know if getting into SLS is a strong indication that one will get into the Academy??

Many people get into SLS and get into the academy. Many people don't get into SLS and get into the academy. So, the answer you are looking for is "maybe." Keep the grades up, show leadership, keep your nose clean, and get a nomination. If you do these things, then you will have a shot at an appointment! Best wishes, and congrats on SLS.

(whose son did not go to SLS, nor did he decide to even apply to WP until September of his senior year)

when you're there they will say "half of you will be back here next year as plebes." i'm not saying that statement is acurrate, but it amounts to roughly 600 kids. i went and i'm on the cusp of getting in; my friend did not go and got a loa.

statistically, it's true that it's harder to be accepted to SLS than WP itself (in terms of how many applied vs. the number accepted). they tell you that over and over again while you're up there that it's harder to get into SLS than the academy itself. but that certainly doesn't take into account that you must have a nomination, clearance from DODMERB and a passing CFA score to even be considered for admission.

I applied VERY late to SLS (around late FEB). I still have no idea how I got in now that I see how competitive it is. I went and it was an amazing experience (probably the highlight of my summer). I also received my appointment this past december.

haha hey??

to give you some encouragment- it does put you one up in the admissions process. you've already opened your application, a cadet has interviewed you, and you've taken the cfa.

Yes, but it would be wise to re-take the CFA as one would hope your scores would be higher a year later.

100% true. i'm actually retaking it in a week.

bottom line, it opens your eyes to your weak and strong points and where you stand.

Hey i was accepted too!! i got the packet just as i was heading out the door for a trip on Friday so that's why i'm so late posting.....

I'm not sure i can go tho. there's a conflict with my finals and NYS REGENTs exams (we start school in september and end in early june in NY)

i wish they had a later date for the sls. i mean if it's hard for ppl in the academy's home state to go they should make a later session

Not really. West Point isn't like civilian colleges where they get most of their students from in-state. It says on college board that only 8% of the cadets are from New York so I highly doubt they would change their entire schedule to accomodate the "in-staters"

good point but i mean would it really be that hard to bump one of the sessions a week back? all the kids in other states are just on summer vacation it's not a big deal for them but it's smack in the middle of finals for everyone here or anyone else w/ similar school timing

haha. I have school during all those sessions too. Most people actually finish finals a week early to attend SLS. You probably could do that but IDK what the regents exam is. Sounds intense. Is that the test where it tells the state which school you go to?

talk to someone at your school about finals and missing that week. i was told last summer that if you really needed to switch sessions, it could be done if a person of the same gender from another session could switch with you. that might just have been for usafa though...

yes. SLS must fit in the West Point calendar. Graduation is not until May 23rd then they only have a week to get ready for you guys.

I know lots of kids have trouble scheduling due to finals and other exams. Just do the best you can and consult with your guidance office. If you absolutely can't attend one of the weeks - advise the admissions office.

3000-4000 rising seniors apply to SLS. About 400 attend each session for a total of 800. SLS is very competitive academically, the vast majority are probably already academically qualified for an appointment and the academy has this information.
While at SLS each candidate has an opportunity for an interview and to take and pass the CFA. I would urge everyone who goes to SLS arrive in shape to do well on the CFA - then you don't have to worry about it later.

All of this information in the hands of the admissions office gives them an opportunity to offer you a letter of assurance in the summer. This gives you a leg up on the admissions process if you decide that West Point is right for you.

If the admissions office says that half the kids at SLS will be back as plebes, believe them.

quick question...what happens if you get accepted to SLS, but cannot go due to family or school conflict? What are the results?

thanks

You don't go to SLS .... It would be good to go - but if you decline it isn't a deal breaker.

ok thanks, just checking....I did not want some silly excuse to ruin my chances of receiving an appointment the following year.

Yea dont worry about not being able to go. I got accepted last year, however I chose not to go because I had Boys State the same week. There is an accept/decline option in the acceptance packet.

And declining the offer definitely won't hurt your chances at an appointment. I got my USMA LOA in early September...Good Luck

Boys State - SLS

Boys State is a terrific program to qualify yourself in the eyes of West Point admissions.

So too is Eagle Scout.

SLS si not a gty, and it is almost a non sequitor if you did not get into SLS regarding the admission process udring your senior year.
