What is the Academy’s policy on cell phones use in general but in particular smart phones. When do you get it back that first year, how much can you use it, what arnt you allowed to do with it?

Per my son whatever you want as long as you don't get caught! His squadron didn't get them back until early October but obviously other than playing music or videos loudly enough to be heard, generally in the evenings as long as they were smart enough to lock their doors, there didn't seem to be any restrictions! Although he also had Netflix on his computer by the end of August and pretty much anything you can do on a phone he could do more easily via computer (ie texting via FB instead of phone, talking via Skype instead of a phone, listening to music via Pandora or whatever the heck he uses), so getting the phone back wasn't that big of a deal - he was mostly glad to have it so when he borrowed a car a few times he could use it for the GPS/navigation features!

You can do whatever with a smart phone. Lots of people have it. Freshman year, you can't have them until Parent's Weekend. After that, it is up to your squadron during the week (most will let you have them). After Basic, you get them back on the weekends. You get it back permanently after recognition.

SUGGESTION!!!!

Don't let your phone ring, make a noise, and don't use it when you are in/near class. Not unless you're calling 911.

you get it back when YOUR squadron decides. Some receive it back the day after BCT ends. Some on parent's weekend. Some later. It's not an "Academy" rule; it's a "Squadron" rule.
