STEM?

Haven't heard anything here :-(
Kind of assuming she didn't get in but will never tell her that! The good thing is, if she didn't get in, she still has a full summer between band and Sea Cadet trainings!

We all agree that a big part of STEM and NASS is outreach. I am on active duty in Maryland (but not USNA). Our number three purposefully stayed away from STEM and waited for NASS, hoping for a slight chance. Maybe it was pure luck, but she also got in. (Number one and two only applied to NASS and got in).

I imagine there are those who were selected for STEM and then later NASS as well, just not sure the numbers and where they live.

Maybe it is something worth considering if you/your children are rising high schoolers, especially if you do live close to USNA.

I was denied by STEM, but got accepted to NASS this year. Just food for thought

Well, my son went to STEM, CVW, NASS and is a Plebe. Daughter went to STEM, CVW, is accepted to NASS, and is a 2022 applicant. We are from a competive area of Virginia. I don't think there's any way for us on the outside to determine the calculations of the admissions boards, unfortunately. I wish there was though!

It's a long short for my Mid Sib as she attended STEM in her freshman year. She loved it so much she wanted to go back. She applied in hopes that maybe the numbers were low in our area. It's not looking so good, but it's ok she will apply for SS next year. My Oldest son went to NASS and my daughter went to NASS and CVW at this point there was no STEM and my 3rd Mid who's there now went to STEM, NASS and CVW. I hope everyone hears good news soon!

We live in Virginia and haven't heard anything either. I expect our area is very competitive and I'll be shocked if he gets in - even with all As, sports and just joined Sea Cadets.
I went to USAFA many years ago and didn't get into their summer program so I've told him to not let it bother him and try again next year. It would, however, be nice to know for scheduling purposes!!

Exactly there is a percentage like only 65% went to Summer Seminar.. so not to worry!!

For Sea Cadets National Headquarters will reimburse NASS, AIM, STEM, and SLE costs. You will also receive advanced training credits. You will not see the training listed of Magellan. Your unit will need to produce a set of local arranged training forms that will be brought to the program and signed by one of the officers. The Action letter has not been sent out for the 2017 programs but will show up on homeport this spring.

As for my story, I was denied to STEM but accepted to NASS and CVW. I was accepted to AFASS but denied to AIM. I am from VA and was appointed to USNA, USAFA,USMA, and USCGA. I will be attending USNA '21. When I was denied to STEM I filled my summer with Sea Cadet Training and learned amazing things.

@MKlap I am sure your unit is already working with you on his attending RT. Fort Indian town Gap is where we send most of our recruits. POLA in Norfolk run by LCDR Weggen is amazing. Another great VA training is MAA academy in Virginia Beach it is the only training I have been to taught completely by active duty.

Tick Tick Tick

Well Sea Cadet trainings are all paid for...luckily none of them overlapped with the possible STEM camp. So she'll get to enjoy her last summer as a League Cadet doing an Explorer camp (MAA, Culinary, Photojournalism, and Medical in one week), and POLA. Then there is 2 church camps and lots of freshman band practices. I think we may take a trip to see my dad up near Annapolis, at least she can walk around and visit that way!

Any day now....LOL

I asked a couple of people in my division, including XO, about the reimbursed costs on STEM. They all replied with no, they don't do that.
I already knew that NHQ would reimburse and not my division... If I did get accepted into STEM, how would I proceed with asking them? Thanks.

Thought USNA STEM acceptance comes out May 1? Did some hear back early?

Exactly! So hard to schedule other camps because of waiting:(

Ok I found the Action letter with a little digging here is what it says,

3.8. Military Academy Summer Seminars/STEM 2017

1) Applications are now being accepted. APPLY ONLINE!!!

  1. 2) For information regarding applying and reimbursement, go to

    www.seacadets.org/academy-programs

  2. 3) HQ will only reimburse the cost of the seminar fee, not travel costs.

  3. 4) Advancement credit for those attending is authorized.

  4. 5) Manual entry to the Magellan Record Book is required by the unit upon successful

    completion. The training codes are:
    • RY: Navy Shore, USNA Summer Seminar (NASS)

    • GY: Coast Guard, USCG Academy Introduction Mission (AIM)

    • NW: USMA (West Point), Summer Leaders Experience (SLE)

    • RF: Navy Shore, USNA Sports Camps

    • RS: Navy Shore, USNA STEM
  5. 6) Questions regarding the above are to be directed to training@seacadets.org

My understanding is that your unit is going to have to produce local arranged training orders. When you pay for the camp keep a copy of the receipt. When you finish the camp you will provide your unit with the receipt and signed orders. They will enter into magellan and NHQ will pay you back. Now most of this you do not need to worry about. What you should do is write down the link to the action letter and talk to your training officer at the next drill or email them. If you do not have a training officer ask a senior cadet who to talk to about training. Use the Chain of Command. Most likely they are going to have no clue on how to do this so make them refer to the action letter. Better yet if you are doing this in person hand them a printed out copy of the action letter. If they have any questions direct them to email training@seacadets.org .

If you have any more questions on sea cadets feel free to ask.

Yes, he is going to RT at Fort Indiantown Gap in late June. Good luck at the Naval Academy, I'm sure you'll be more prepared than I was at USAFA - I had no military experience at all!

Thanks. I will show this to an officer next drill.
What is advancement credit, and how does it work? I'm only a recruit—my understanding is that STEM is considered an AT—so would this apply to me?

So, I'm a bit confused... Would they pay me back after STEM is over?

Also, I have a few questions about Sea Cadets in general.
Can you fail RT, and how would one fail? My biggest concern is the PT, although I am really trying to get into shape.
I am most likely going to RT this summer in July. It is pretty rushed, as I have just joined SC, but it's what I want. How rigorous is the PT? Could you provide a brief description of the activities in RT?
I am working on my BMR. I have less than a month to complete it (I'm halfway through assignment 2). I need it completed before next drill. I will do my PRT next month too. What are some things I should work on for the PRT and RT? I've been running and doing pushups and situps.
Thank you again, everything right now is confusing and rushed. Waiting for the email too, only a few days left! Fingers crossed.

Got to agree with Letsdothis and now Letsdothis2!
