STEM?

Ok,
1. Its great you are asking questions!!!
2. Yes, they pay you back after STEM is over
3. Since you are a recruit you will not be awarded advanced training credit until after you finish RT. This probably doesn't mean much to you so let me explain. You need advanced training credit to advance in Sea Cadets so STEM will count as your credit to advance you from E-2 to E-3.

4. You can Fail RT by quitting, not getting a high enough grade on all of the assignments or conduct( this is really hard to do), breaking a rule and getting kicked out or not passing your PRT.

5. Get working on your BMRs I tell my cadets to try and work on it everyday. Each assignment should take you about an hour. If you are stuck on a question and working on the computer use command F to search for key words.

6. I am going to attach the physical fitness manual. http://homeport.seacadets.org/display/Manuals/Physical+Readiness+Manual
In this you can find what to do with cadets that do not pass the PRT. This may give you suggestions on how to train. Also you can find the scores you need. You will need to meet the minimum requirements in every event but try and do national or presidential. The PT will be appropriate as long as you can pass the PRT. It should not be easy but it should be doable. I say should because some training commands have very easy PT and others have more challenging but appropriate PT.

7. As far as what you will do at RT it will vary by the Training Command. You will learn to march, military customs, PT, and spend a lot of time in classrooms. You will learn to make a rack, get dressed quickly, and square your meals. Your training command may have you do other, fun, activities. If you go over 4th of July they may have a party where you can relax for awhile and talk to other cadets.

8. The biggest thing I recommend for RT is take it all in stride. Try to keep a positive attitude and do your absolute best at all times. Also go in knowing that you will be challenged and that It will make you a better person. Everyone keeps asking me if I am nervous/scared for plebe summer. My answer is always No! I am excited for the challenge and the opportunities that I will have. I feel prepared for plebe summer because of my experiences at RT and other advanced trainings.

One more piece of advice talk to the Petty Officers in your unit if you have questions. They may seem like big scary people but If they are a good leader they will care about your success. I make it a point to ask all of the new recruits if they have questions or what they think they might want to do. Believe it or not your Petty Officers were once clueless recruits, I sure was.

I'm still not sure how it works but I will discuss this with someone next drill or email HQ. Thanks.

That's pretty comforting lol. Still hoping I can make it through RT. Is there any swimming involved?
Also, about the advancement credit:
How long does it take to be promoted? How many credits do you need to have for promotion?
Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions!

You can promote every 4-6 months. League Cadets do not have to have an AT to advance but Sea Cadets do. My dd is a PO3, she will go back down to an E-1 until she completes RT and then bumps back up to E3. She's not crazy about the lack of advancement for almost a year but we may get her into an RT over the winter to speed up the process.
Our chain of command is almost all retired Navy Officers, and we have 2 Senior Chiefs, they tend to be really up on how STEM/Summer session reimbursement pans out but they are also extremely SA driven for the kids. We have a BGO that comes by every couple months and meets with kids going through the process to give pep talks and look at their portfolio.

Swimming is going to be based on your training command. It should not be a requirement to pass RT. If you are not a strong swimmer I would suggest getting swim lessons to help prepare you for USNA. When I was at CVW we did a pool workout and played water polo. You will also need to meet swimming requirements all 4 years at the academy.

+1 @seacadetmum Thank you for the assist! I went to winter RT and it was a really great experience. It opened up my following summer and allowed me to do a lot of really cool things.

For Sea Cadets it is every 6 months for you to advance + course work + training credit + test ( only for PO3 and above). Here is a handy chart. http://www.jamesmhannanseacadets.com/cadet-advancement.html

@seacadetmum
Is previous experience in the League Cadets the reason why she skips E-2? I thought that was the rank for cadets after completing RT. Good luck to your daughter too.
@NotCollege
I actually joined the swim team for my division. So far I've been to three practices (going again today) and it has been pretty difficult for me. Swimming is not easy and (as you know) I'm not in the best physical shape, so it's been tough. Still have a few years to work on it though.
Thanks to both of you for your help. I have to do my BMR now :/

Yes, if a League Cadet makes Petty Officer before advancing to Sea Cadets they come out of RT an E-3 instead of an E-2. The same for enlisting, if a Sea Cadet makes PO before graduating, they leave Basic as an E-3.
The BMR is a lot now, but in the future you'll be happy you have the knowledge! (It's the same coursework they do in Basic Training, and I think Plebe summer.)

BMR stands for Basic Military Requirement? It is for enlisted only.

Please tell me they do not use the whole book and the sea cadets are not learning from it! It is from Feb 2002 (when @Capt MJ was still on active duty)! In Chapter 10 they were talking about dungarees and so many changes have occurred since that year. Today female Sailors are getting white dixie cup covers instead of female combination covers at boot camp now.

I went to an official Navy site (https://www.courses.netc.navy.mil/courses/14325/14325.pdf) and it says on the cover:
"Notice: NETPDTC is no longer responsible for the content accuracy of the NRTCs."

Warfares, platforms... so much outdated info in it...Do the sea cadets think the uniforms in the BMR is cool? Even the bell bottoms have changed!

I did not exam the whole book, but I doubt if there is even 50% of correct info related to the Navy today!

5. Get working on your BMRs I tell my cadets to try and work on it everyday. Each assignment should take you about an hour. If you are stuck on a question and working on the computer use command F to search for key words.
I think I found the answer to my question! Who is learning how to use a rotary phone today? Anyone???

I am hitting my rack, and I hope I will wake up from this nightmare!

This is some serious misinformation. I am not sure where you get this. If you get this from retired officers or chiefs running sea cadets, tell them. They need serious updates on things they do not know. There is no way Recruit Training Command is using this. Also, Plebes use Reef Points at USNA, which is updated EVERY YEAR!

@ktnatalk - I simply used google to find the link. I do not know if that's the current course. I also don't have my kid's passwords to the home port (and they're in bed since it's a school night!), so I cannot answer if they have an updated version.

The USNSCC does rely on the graciousness of the Navy League and also on donations - some units might still be wearing the dungarees, although they are being phased out. My current PO3 cadet has not yet been issued the Dixie cup, simply because the unit has not bought them yet. It's a large expense for a battalion. At the parent meeting it was discussed but decided we would use the current issued combo covers until they've run out of life or the Navy League orders the change as mandatory. Until then all cadets will wear what they were issued.

Our unit has been invited to meet with CNO ADM Richardson in June...perhaps he will notice any uniform issues and suggest the Navy League consider funding [emoji12]

There are still squadrons wearing dungarees and units have until end of 2018 to switch to Dixie cups. I recently went to the uniform store on base with my other supply officer and we dropped over $200 to buy new ones just for the males. Luckily we don't have many females so it shouldn't cost much but we work on a limited budget. My dd still wears her garrison cap. Our League Cadets provide their own uniforms. This is not a an active military organization, we rely on whatever is surplus from the Navy. So yes, we are outdated, but the kids have fun and they aren't defending our country yet so I don't understand your extreme concern to the point of yelling all caps? When I went through Boot Camp many moons ago, we did use the BMR, so it was updated, maybe a few years down the road our kids will get an updated version but today is not that day.

While I was never involved with Sea Cadets, I have no doubt it is a valuable program for all the right reasons: leadership, teaching sea service, STEM and many more... It's is also very important for the program to be executed correctly - by volunteers. I have strong feedback to what @NotCollege posted in response to @OZZY, that the sea cadets are required to do the assignments in the book and get graded - I know the content is wrong, but do they? Is that unique to the outfit he was involved in, or they all do the same thing? How do you unlearn the wrong info that you were graded and got credits for during Plebe Summer or Plebe Year (rates and ProKnow)? Probably easier for some than others, but why the wrong stuff is being taught at all?

I look back at all my posts on this thread. The ALL CAPS are acronyms, other than "EVERY YEAR" when I referred to what is done to ensure the info are current and accurate, compares to a training manual that was published a few months after we were attacked in 2001. I do stand by my response to your last one that what I quoted from you is misinformation.

Could you get the people in charge to use the content in the link below instead? It's two years old, and we already have a different CNO since, but it's mostly current (other than a few new hulls in the fleet), and, it is in color!

@ktnatalk - Have you considered volunteering with your local Sea Cadet unit? Not all the leaders have kids in the USNSCC, some are active duty or retired and simply enjoy teaching and guiding the kids. You would be a fantastic asset to any unit!

Hahahaha... I fear that question was coming, but thanks for the vote of confidence! TBH I am not sure where they are in Maryland, where I currently live. There are so many Naval bases and commands in Maryland I imagine the unit(s) are fully staffed and that's probably why I did not hear about them needing help. Oh, and you are trying to trick me: I am about to graduate from this business called raising teenagers - what makes you think I want to extend that "career"? :D

Oh, it's gotta be at least a little bit appealing, right?!?! These kids really are the best, and we need good leaders to help guide them!

You can follow this link to find the battalion nearest to you http://www.seacadets.org/

Dare ya!

Thought USNA STEM acceptance comes out May 1? Did some hear back early?

Exactly! So hard to schedule other camps because of waiting:(

Anything??
Nothing here one way or the other, maybe they wait until the last day to send all the declines?
