All regular appts done?

Something to keep in mind:

If this year is like the last few years, what you are seeing now is part of the trim down to candidates for the National Pool and NAPS.

In the next couple of weeks, Admissions will first be determining who gets appointments from the National Pool and then selecting candidates from the non-appointed National Pool for selection to the remaining slots at NAPS.

Not trying to build false hopes here; but from practical experience I can tell you that appointments can come as late as April 15 and rarely some time later for the VERY few that make it in from the wait list.

Expect the first part of next week to be as bad as late last week for some candidates as the big sort-out continues.

So all the regular appointments from the senate/congressional districts have already been handed out?

Does the portal update if you received a TWE or BFE? Neither from USNA yet, but received an Appointment to the Air Force Academy last Thursday. Sorry for everyone who received a TWE.

I asked this question in another thread. Someone who had an appointment from November said their portal still had not changed. Best guess: no.

Just got back from a week long family cruise. The mountain of mail on the kitchen Island made me think of what jack must of felt when he saw the sleeping giant in the kitchen for the first time...........anyway, nothing more daunting than watching my DD look at each and every TWE slowly with guarded anticipation.............got thru the stack of about 30-40 TWE's and...........zip, zilch, nuttin, notta from the Navy! still in the game. I promptly went to my medicine cabinet in my bathroom and took a zantac washed down with a couple of tums. Tomorrow is a new day as I remind myself that God is in control and do not worry about what tomorrow brings.......

The portal (once all candidate information is posted) never changes until it self-deletes - probably in May or early June. It never shows Vice Presidential nominations.

Upon returning to the kitchen my DD informed me she received notification she had been named/awarded a 2014 State Governors Scholar. This is an award that is given to the top 1% of graduating seniors in her state. Should she email her admissions counselor this info this late in the game?(still no TWE or BFE) and if so how would you word it? thanks for any insight any of you may have.

I feel anything could still help at this point so I told her she should email her counselor immediately.

Feel free to advise....

This late in the game. It won't make a difference. I received Academic All-State in Wrestling. E-Mailed AC and he said thanks but it didn't matter at this point and that there was nothing else I could do.

seems to be a recurrent theme that many DS/DD's ( including my own) are achieving great things and receiving excellent scholarships/awards/leadership positions etc that would all be most helpful in the acceptance process. Unfortunately, USNA will not accept anything after Jan. 31st. Ugh, good luck

Just Enjoying The Day...

Not sure what to say other than I’m still focused on building memories. I try to go with the adage that “stress is self induced.” I will admit however that this has become intense in our humble abode.

With that as a parent I understand how it feels to see our older son get the TWE. I also understand how it feels for our younger son to be awarded the NROTC scholarship. That was difficult because we know how much our older son wanted it at the time.

When it was time to reapply DS1 decided not to do it because he did not want to get in the way of DS2. I guess you can call that brotherly love. He went on to say that he was quite happy in the University he currently attends and that in the end he will apply for OCS and if all else fails; he will go enlisted and apply again from being enlisted.

Getting back to DS2 he was thrilled and honored to have been awarded the NROTC scholarship back in mid Jan so his “A2” plan was firm. From that a long time poster passed along his congrats and offered his personal help as his son also attends the University my son could potentially go to. It’s an excellent school with a great NROTC unit and it is nice knowing he has the chance at getting to know someone before it all begins.

Like most I have also followed this post since it started but I have only replied a few times mostly sticking to “building the memory” theme along with “still in the game.”

I can completely understand the heart break of one DS receiving the TWE, the pride of another receiving the NROTC, and what it’s like to still be waiting and hoping to see if is appointed to his “A” plan. A guess this is a complete roller coaster ride (with the inverted twisted loops) in some respect.
So now I resort back to building the memories…

Thank you to all. Although this will become a distant memory in a few short weeks it will still be part of the overall memory.

DS will also re-apply on April 1st if he is not appointed!!

Cheers!

We are hearing of so many TWE being delivered. I haven't heard of anyone getting the coveted BFE in awhile. Are there still some to be had? Or is the inevitable on the way?

WOW!

So very sad. I raggedly drug myself into the house after events this weekend to check on the ole support chain and boy what a doozie of a strand. It just makes me want to get through the screen and give you a huge hug, every one of you!

I cherish every day with my DS and will brace for the impact of whatever the next few weeks holds in store in the mail. Nothing as of tonight, but tomorrow is a new day.

One Way or Another!

This is a process that I have learned is not for the faint of heart. It takes patience, perseverance and a strong will along with a desire to serve our country. These are qualities all our children have displayed and I am proud of each and every one of them. I don't know what the next few days or weeks will hold for DS - but he too has a great Plan B & C in place and Plan D is on the table. One way or another he will end up a Naval Officer. XO Prepswimmom

The TWE season is here, it’s true. Saturday brought a storm of the darn things and the coming days will probably bring more. But listen, don’t despair, any of you - really - don’t…at least not for long. That slim envelope does NOT erase or diminish the drive, the accomplishments, the focus or the desire to serve one’s country! It’s just a TWE - a piece of paper – indicating only that this ONE track to the GOAL is closed off FOR NOW. The goal of course being to serve this country as an officer in the military. That goal isn’t obliterated by the TWE, not by any stretch! Just one of the tracks is closed – for now. Just one out of quite a few out there. You TWE holders, and parents of TWE holders, the train has not been derailed - it’s just going to need to take a different track.

This “wisdom” I’m spouting comes from experience. Experience x 3! Three of my six children set their eyes and souls on one goal – to serve as officers in the military. Over the past decade I have seen each one of these kids wind up on a different track to that goal. Different tracks – same goal. All three began their respective journeys with a USNA application and nomination while in high school. Only one made it in the “usual” way. She marched into Bancroft on I-Day as a just graduated high school senior. Four years later she was commissioned at the ’09 USNA graduation – 2nd Lt. USMC. Now she’s a Captain stationed near Pearl Harbor.

She plans on returning to the main land, to our home, at the end of May to perform the commissioning ceremony of her younger brother even though he received the dreaded TWE April 7, 2010 of his senior year. On that late date, his USNA Class of 2014 “track” to becoming a Marine officer was closed (DQ unwaiverable - one of his eyes was not correctable to 20/20) so on to a different track he went - NROTC/Marine Option College Programmer at the in-state school – Class of 2014. During his sophomore year he applied to and was admitted to the PLC Marine Commissioning program (2 six-week summer sessions in Quantico) which he successfully completed this past summer. And now, just four years after the TWE, he will have earned his Civil Engineering degree and his Marine Officer commission – 2nd Lt. USMC. That TWE did NOT derail his train – he just took other tracks – ones that have been pretty amazing and got him to that Marine Officer goal.

As for the third kid with the Officer goal who started on a USNA ’16 candidate track during his senior year in high school two years ago, that one wound up taking yet another track when the potentially derailing news began arriving. I say “began arriving” because his news arrived piecemeal back in 2012. First, he was informed he was NOT scholastically qualified (not stellar ACT/SAT scores the culprit), but possible NAPS consideration – that was mid-February 2012. Mid-March BGO e-mailed DS that his scholastic not-qualified status was reversed - no further explanation. Late March – BGO e-mail indicating DS now being considered for Foundation. April 15, 2012 – Call from USNA Admissions, Foundation sponsored prep year offered to this kid. He was ecstatic and immediately accepted. He attended NMMI for the year following high school graduation and exactly one year later on April 15, 2013, his MOC called him out in New Mexico and told him he had been appointed to USNA Class of ’17! He is there in Annapolis now, a happy Plebe looking forward to Herndon and a few days later a quick trip home to witness his brother being commissioned a 2nd Lt. USMC by his sister, Captain USMC and then back to the Yard for him for his 3/C summer training schedule – surface and OSTS (offshore sailing).

So take it from a family who knows TWEs - Don’t let those skinny envelopes derail you, they don’t wield that much power – they really don’t. Your drive, your goal, your desire to serve is way, WAY more powerful than some old piece of paper! So square your shoulders, hold your head up, and march, keep marching towards that goal. It's. Still. There.

Understand the frustration but if you think it through, it makes sense. USNA, like all competitive universities, has a deadline for applications -- in this case Jan. 31. If they allowed people to submit information after that date, the deadline would become meaningless. Not to mention that it wouldn't be fair to those for whom decisions had already been made.

It can be a bit harsh for some folks, but it is a fair policy and does apply to everyone. Obviously, for those reapplying, information received after Jan. 31 can be used next year.

kar57,

Wow. Thank you so much. You are wise. As a mom with 3 more boys to follow current DS, all of whom seem - at least now - to be looking at military service as a goal, I so appreciate your long view. It puts those nasty TWE's in their real place. For all of us.

Still waiting here, but this reminder will help regardless of what arrives in the mail.

Good luck to everyone this week.
