Strange Circumstance - Recruited Athlete vs Congressional District

Well since this is the USNA forum and about a candidate speaking with a USNA coach... it makes no sense to many of us who have been involved with recruiting and/or admissions at USNA. Being ranked #1 after the first heat of a race when there are 10 more to go and participants are still signing up doesn’t mean much. As far as I know (and I am sure one of the other BGOs will chime in if I am off on this) USNA does not divulge that kind of information to candidates. I have never seen it. Also if a MOC provides a ranked slate or principle slate then scoring doesn’t mean much. MOCs can use whatever criteria they want to produce that list.

The RCs at West Point know 100% where each candidate is currently ranked on their local MOC slate. And while it can change daily, they are usually willing to share that that information with candidates. A meeting with your RC is a critical step if you can find a way to do it. We host events where the RC comes to our region and meets with each applicant. "USMA1994; you are currently #3 on your slate. Your ACT scores and leadership profile are a little lower than the competition. If you can increase your ACT to above 32, you would be closer to the top"

I would assume that the other academies do the same but cannot say for certain.

I will PM you (USMA 1994) once I have enough postings as what you are saying is VERY consistent with the feedback we have gotten. Also, I have tried to keep this posting high level as to protect the candidate, coach and process. I do not want to upset the apple cart or cause a problem for the coach. Thanks.

I would not assume this is the way it works for USNA. To my knowledge, USNA Admissions does NOT share info with candidates such as where they stand on a slate. USNA Admissions personnel conduct relatively few visits to meet with individual candidates -- I've never had it happen to a single candidate (and I've had more than 400 candidates over the years) -- not saying it never happens b/c it does, but it's rare.

The fact is that each SA has very different approaches to admissions. The fact that something works a certain way for one SA does not mean it works that way for another. Had a close friend applying to USAFA last year. I didn't even begin to try to tell him how the USAFA process worked b/c I have no idea. Not a clue. Referred him to a friend who is a USAFA grad.

Also, agree with Hoops. It is not possible for Admissions to know where a candidate stands on an MOC slate b/c most MOCs have yet to select their slates. Most have not even reached the deadline for applications. In all but the non-competitive districts, their committees must still review the packages and often conduct interviews. In our area, nominees are not informed of the MOC's decision until at least early December. Then the MOC must submit the slate to USNA. Even non-competitive districts may wait until late in the process to submit in the hopes that more people will show interest. So to say that USNA knows where someone stands on an MOC slate much before the end of the year makes no sense.

Also, even if you were to say that USNA knows who is in which district and ranks them that way . . . there is NO TELLING what MOC committees do. I've seen them make some strange decisions. So USNA could say someone is #1 in a district and find that person doesn't even get a nom.

^ This .... I talk with my West Point counterpart from time to time, and it is clear to me that USMA is much more hands on than USNA. I've never heard of USNA ranking internally prior to Noms and Appointments, let alone releasing that kind of information to Candidates.

 I would call the coach and ask for an explanation. My guess is that this is the way for the coach to say we are no longer recruiting you to USNA. Just my speculation.
As others have stated applications are not due until, 1/31 and most MOC's have not even had interviews. Again I am very  If applicant is ranked #1 on a competitive slate they will get appointment. Recruited athlete or not. Again just call the coach and say #1 Am I still being recruited? #2 Continue to put together the best application you can. The chips will fall where they may.
