Other than Project Go, are there any other study abroad programs open for contracted Army ROTC. My DS is a contracted 4 year AROTC MS 1 and informed me that he applied for a study abroad program through AROTC/Cadet Command. I am curious how this will affect his scholarship payments for tuition if he is off campus for a semester. How will this affect his MS class that he will miss while abroad? Any info is appreciated thanks in advance.

I'm sure your son knows the answers, and if he doesn't he should discuss them with cadre. I know a Marine Option MIDN who studied abroad but am not familiar to the level of detail your questions require.

I can tell you that I spent sophomore year abroad (back when Reagan was president) as a scholarship AROTC cadet. They had me do correspondence courses, but I'm not sure anyone ever looked at them. It was an awesome deal. Probably gets much dicier as a junior, though, with Advance Camp prep and whatnot.

Spring sophomore year is the plan. Europe if the current situation allows it.

It is something my DS is looking at discussing with Cadre. His Honors College really pushes it. He plans to ask if he can and if not he would go Sophomore Summer.

We have allowed scholarship cadets in the past to study abroad. The scholarship still pays the tuition, but not the airline ticket and other incidentals. The student would have to do the ROTC course virtually or conduct the ROTC class as independent study as enrollment in the necessary ROTC class is a requisite to receiving scholarship benefits.

I studied abroad while on AFROTC scholarship. Like @MohawkArmyROTC stated, my scholarship covered tuition while I paid the study abroad fees. I had to double up on ROTC classes to make up for the time I was gone, but it was a great experience and I’m VERY happy I did it!

Great info above - my main recommendation here would be to ensure you have a 4 year plan to graduate/ commission that includes a semester abroad that is expressly approved by both your academic advisor and military academic advisory/ chain of command.

Confirm payment paths (third party v university) and how scholarships are processed with those if applicable. Semesters abroad come with so many added costs often: Flights to/from, meals for 3.5 months not covered with a pure room charge, higher tuition, a EU cell plan, and the about 20 cool excursions in city and nearby countries, cities that are ala carte, maybe one parent long weekend visit, museum fees, etc. In my experience too knowing where to buy food like a local v tourist is a gamechanger - also knowing which intra-country flights are cheap and when is amazing. London to Madrid - literally 19.00 /RT on the right weekend, 400 euro R/T on peak. Eurrail pass optoins... I went to Italy, Switzerland, France, Monaco for less money than a buddy who traveled to Paris alone for half the duration but didn't plan, ate better food, etc. Granted his sheet thread counts were exponentially higher, his bathrooms more private... research hostels, student discounts,, and "cheap seats" to events like football games Research scholarship opportunities from your university. Information and planning can be so powerful.
