Does anyone know the percentage of mids who end up having to take summer school? My son told me ALOT of his 4/c class were having to take summer school, and I wondered how common it really is.

My DD says a couple hundred mids go to summer school every year, almost as many as the incoming class at INDOC. There are additional mids who fail a class and lag the class (overload on credits and retake it during academic year) rather than going to summer school. It's a tough curriculum.

Holy Schneikies BatMan!!! When I did summer school it was only like a dozen.

I think summer school was tougher to schedule in the quarter system. I also think the approach was more sink or swim back in the dark ages when we attended.

That's consistent with what he said; he said about 30% of his class. Wow.

That's crazy. 30% of the plebe class is in summer school, and license pass rates were weak for seniors. Seems like an issue worth investigating for the administration.

Not really. Most plebes will fail a class here or there plebe year. Every plebe who fails a class ends up in summer school. It's probably closer to 20% than 30%. Engine license pass rate was close to 90%. Deck was 66%, which is higher or equal to comparable maritime academies. It isn't the teachers fault if the student doesn't do any work.

I can't recall if we even had summer school back in the 70s. . . maybe we did. . . don't know. I just know I was so scared to fail a class that I never did. . . Passed a couple by the skin of my teeth. . . but pass, I did. . .

In reality, there is very little of a summer break even if summer school is not required. But, for your question, no.

Do they get a summer break at all if they have to go to summer school?

The new 3rd class A splitters will get a month, everyone else will get pretty much nothing. 2nd class A splitters will be expected to work indoc or do an internship.

You will only have to work INDOC one time. I would recommend working it after your plebe year to get it over with and to give you more time later to work any more internships you might want to try during the summer.

Don't you have to work it if you are a first half Midn Officer? If you work it after plebe year and end up an officer 1/C year, you'll work it twice?

How many courses are offered during summer school? When I went it was only Physics.

My understanding is that only EMTs have to work INDOC twice.

What KP Eng posted is true, if you're a midshipman officer you'll be working it as a 1/C so I'd delay delay delay delay, besides, by the time you're a 1/C it's easier to find an excuse not to work it, you need an internship, or you've got something important going on, or more sea time or something.

This works. I was an officer 2nd rotation and never worked indoc.
