Hello and Happy New Year to all. DS is preparing his essays, and he and I were debating character counts. Essay 1 is 3000 characters max. Essay 2 is 1500 characters max. I'm turning to this knowledgeable and more experienced group to help us settle the debate - does character count include OR exclude spaces? Thanks in advance.

My son did his essays in Google. Then you can use the Tools>Word Count to see what the character count is. I believe spaces do count as characters. Some portals will not allow you to go over that character count...the text box will stop allowing you to input. However, if you do it in a word document, you can edit more easily and check before pasting into the text box on the application portal. Good luck!

As @Elizablessed noted, writing in Google doc's and using the word count tool (including spaces) is a good approach. I also recommend using the document to 'save' the original essays, as you son will find he will reuse them in the future for other SA applications and ROTC scholarships. My students do the same. Due date is the 15th :)

It includes spaces. The app won't let you submit them if they are over the character count. My ds found that his essays needed to be a few characters short (according to the count in Word) for them to submit.
