Summer Seminar

Got my rejection letter in the mail today. The site still says "under consideration" but on my actual academy app it says "not competitive" (I'm guessing because of my ACT math score). Just thought I'd let you guys know... :bang:
I was not accepted to ANY of the summer seminar/leadership programs out of HS...even though I was an AMAZINGLY BRILLIANT TALENTED LEADER among all students nationwide!

And then, the next year, I got the long thin letters from every academy.

And after a year of prep school (Northwestern)...

I received 3 BIG FAT PACKAGES.

It can be done, don't let "not" getting SS be a big deal.

Also, since the SS application also serves as a PCQ, I found out from going https://admissions.usafa.edu/ > Online Application > Status of already submitted application > and then typing in SSN and DOB that my application has been considered "competitive".

My son tried this, and it acted like it was initiating a new application, yet many of the fields were pre-populated with his information. He was selected for SS, so wonder if it's different?

USMA indicated in their letter not to open a separate application, so we may call to see how he should handle for USAFA.

Anyone else see similar when they went to check status?

The PCQ is just a LITTLE different from the summer seminar app. For example, you'll notice that the list of YES/NO questions, they have a few more questions on the PCQ than on the summer seminar app. Just go ahead and update the information. Updating a pre-existing app is not the same as opening a new one.

That's what I had to do as well. I had to go through and update the PCQ a little and then when it gets to the final page, I see the status of my app.

Hawk, I did the same thing. I was accepted to SS and on the official application, there was an additional list of yes/no questions.

Thank you for all of the encouragement guys. I know that SS does not have any weight on my acceptance to the academy, but the lack of confidence that they had in my application doesn't make me feel very good.
I do have one question though. My PCQ now says that I am "Not Competitive", what does this mean for my application? My understanding is that my application will continue as usual, but they're just letting me know that I'm not in a good position. Am I right? Or does this have a large effect on my application?

Thank you,

Jeremy

Jeremy,

First, they are NOT telling you that they had no confidence in your application. What they are telling you is that in at least one category, you are not "competitive" to the normal application/admission process.

It may be something as "simple" as a single SAT or ACT test score; that's USUALLY what it is. Tell me what they are, I'll tell you straight what I see.

But don't let this dissuade you one bit!

Summer Seminar does have SOME weight on acceptance to the Academy, but just like flieger said do not let this dissuade you. There are tons of people every year that get in and never went to SS. Good luck

It is just that, my ACT math score is too low. Which I believe I have plenty of time to get high enough, and am already studying for.

Thanks for the answer,

AFA Summer Seminar 2010

My son received his email acceptance Feb 28...He'll be attending session C. Best of luck to you!

My son was not accepted to the AFASS and his application page says "still under consideration". His actual application page to the AFA says "competitive". He was accepted to NASS and USMA SLS. He didn't mind not being accepted to AFASS because he had already been invited to participate in Boys State which is at the same time that he would have needed to go to AFASS. He had already made the decision to attend Boys State because of the bearing it would have on his actual application to USNA and USMA.:thumb:

How do you get to the link that shows AFA Application Status as "Competitive". I was told if one applied to Summer Seminar you don't have to kick off the application process, it already has.

Nevermind...I see on the admissions page you can check there...status of COMPETITIVE...assume it means you are on the right track to be considered but really not much more at this point, correct?

Hi!

Math is the "biggie" for USAFA and I "assume" the other SA's as well. Why? Because SO much of the "core" curriculum is engineering based; hence, heavy math requirements.

Put in the study for the tests; take BOTH ACT and SAT (some folks do great on one and lousy on the other) and keep pressing ahead!

Success will come!

Is anyone else having trouble accessing the Instructions to Precandidates Booklet?

Yeah, the pre-candidate's booklet is like... I don't know. It stopped working after March 1st. Luckily I downloaded it when it was still available, so if anyone needs it. Shoot me a PM with your email and I'll happily send it to you!
