Summer Training without Scholarship

I would assume that if a non-scholarship midshipmen received 4-year (or 3-year) scholarship starting during their sophomore year, they don't participate in summer training after freshman year. Is this made up the summer after senior year, if the student is staying for 4 1/2 or 5 years or how would this work? Is the first summer training just skipped all together? Does this present any type of disadvantage?

Since you mentioned midshipmen, I assume you are asking about NROTC. There are a few threads about this that you could search for more information, but the training is not made up. For NROTC, freshman summer training is CORTRAMID, which is about a week each with subs, aviation, ships and Marine Corps. It's a good experience and it's nice to get a chance to see what you like (or don't like) but missing it is not going to hurt your future military career, so there is no real disadvantage.

Are there other times to explore and experience the different options (SWO, subs, etc.) hands on before deciding your service selection or are the other summers focused on just one?

Other summers are just focused on one. You will undoubtedly have lab periods where officers from the different communities come to speak with you. There will also be other presentations. You might be able to arrange summer cruises so you're SWO one year and subs another. The final first class cruise is usually with the community you have, or expect to, select. Of course there is never a guarantee of getting the community you request anyway.

Many units will substitute CORTRAMID for the 2/c enlisted cruise for students who picked up scholarships during freshman year, as it's better overall exposure. You can ask your unit about this when the time is right. If you miss CORTRAMID though, you'll be just fine. Cruises are not made up. Only your final (1/c) cruise is actually required.
