I have been accepted into Texas A&M, Virginia Tech, and have received 2x principal nominations from my Senator and Representative. I am still waiting on a decision from the academy, but if it falls through, I am split between VTech and TAMU. TAMU is offering me a $120,000 non-military scholarship (no contract required), and I am waiting on seeing what scholarships VTech offers me.

I just wanted to know what the major differences between the two universities are like? I am aware they both have Corps of Cadets programs, but with my goal of eventually becoming a pilot, which would be a better option for me?

Thanks.

I don't think either one affects or enhances your goal, unless they have opportunities for flying nearby.

Where do you live with respect to each? Factor in travel costs to and from home.

Which one is better for your planned major? What's the reputation for each with that major?

Have you visited the schools? Which one gives you a better vibe?

Nothing is guaranteed, but it seems highly likely you'll get an appointment. Which Academies do you have nominations for?

I live in South Carolina, so I will be paying OOS tutition for both.

I am planning on majoring in International Affairs. Hope to use this to eventually join a government thinktank as a backup after I exit the military. TAMU certainly has a better program for this.

I have visited both schools, I liked both schools significantly. I'm very torn on which I preferred better.

I have received both of my nominations to the USAFA.

Just to add to considerations, my grandson has been accepted to Virginia Tech - not considering the Corps, and still waiting on some other schools. He lives in Virginia, and his father is a senior Marine Officer who works with a lot of think tanks in the region. Va Tech is closer to DC for internships, and of course offers a way different culture than TAMU in Texas. Have you been to each university to check how you would fit in? Very important.

I have two NROTC students at Va Tech. Both really like the Corp and the school. One reapplied to USNA and is now headed there. The other decided not to reapply to an SA, as the programs at Va Tech are a great fit for him. I fully agree with @kinnem and the advice provided. Visit the units and schools if you can. Pilot training selection chances are likely very similar for each. TAMU is a very large unit so typically they 'see' higher numbers of pilot slots from my understanding. Good luck with your choices!

Kind of ironic, I am at VT now. Obviously, wait on what they tell you, but it’s almost guaranteed that A&M will have the better financial package(probably by a lot). A&M generally has better packages for ROTC peeps, even better than we can get at Tech being in-state.
