I hope this is not a stupid question. Could a tattoo disqualify your Naval Academy Application? I have been told yes if it is somewhere such as your face or neck. The one that I have is not. In fact is is very small and will always be covered up. Could it hurt my chances and do I need to inform anyone that I have it?

I'll answer your question..partially. DoDMERB notifies the program where an applicant has applied of any tattoos, brands, or body piercings. The Programs, Academies and ROTC, make those decisions in accordance with their Service policies. Based on what you describe, it "shouldn't" be a problem, but USNA Admissions can tell you for sure. :wiggle:

There is an actual form you fill out, should you receive an appointment, specifically FOR tattoos. They will be approved (or not) individually. There are specs for them, not sure what they are but they are pretty liberal. One that is discrete and doesn't show should not be an issue. Unless offensive in language.

Face tattoo? No.

Here is their policy. Always try to find the info straight from the horses mouth. If it is covered by regulation PT uniform and unoffensive then it should be fine. However, if you're offered an appointment you will be required to submit paperwork and a picture of the tattoo for it to be judged. In some cases, tattoos require a waiver or even removal in order to keep your appointment. Read the policy and Good Luck!

This topic probably comes up every year in at least one of the SA forums. The only thing I have to add is for anyone thinking about a SA if you do not have a tattoo please hold off on it until you are there. At least familiarize yourself with the policy before getting one.
I know people get them. DD got one when she was enlisted. But the policies change and what tattoos are acceptable changes. I'm not going down the rabbit hole of specifics, but right or wrong I can think of tattoos that were common 10-20 years ago that today would be considered offensive.

DEFINITELY, avoid getting a tattoo shortly before I-Day. While rare, infections can occur and you don't want something like that holding you back.
