Agreed, talk to the CoC as soon as possible. Typically, good units have a sit down very early on, tell him/her right there that this is your intention. They are the ones to submit the nom.
Kids are afraid to do this, I think in part because they feel it is disloyal, but that is nothing farther from the truth. AFROTC CoC's deal with this every single yr., and their goal is not AFROTC, it is AF! That means they want whatever is best for the AF, not the det.
Telling them early on means they can assist you earlier, be it they think your PFT is low, re-take the SAT, or maybe another cadet is applying and how you stack against them.
No commander wants to be told in the end of Sept., that you intend to re-apply and the ROTC rec is due next week. Fastest way to get a eh-eh rec!
Keep an open mind, but more importantly just enjoy life while you are in the moment. Don't worry about this now. Enjoy your friends, and your family. Workout so you will max the PFT, but otherwise than that, your AFROTC det. will inform you of how it will work regarding noms in Aug/Sept.
