DS reported his sport coaches and players for a fight club run before practices, complete with online photo and video evidence. Long story short, charges and coach firings happened and the culture of the team is just a mess. DS decided to not play his senior year since the coach he initially reported it all to before working his chain of command (who told him he was crazy), is in charge.

He feels firmly convicted to not associate with people involved anymore who are still on the team (after their suspensions), including spending 4 hours a day with them 6 days a week. He decided to play Rugby for a high school football team next year instead, and still run/throw for Track.

I respect his decision and thought process, especially after he let the coach and principal know why he felt playing wasn't in his best interests. A little part of me is concerned for his academy application process, but he is dead-on level headed about this. He's by no means giving up or running away, but making a stand that I think is appropriate. I'm kinda sad he is giving up football, but admiring his courage, too.

When it comes to his BGO interview, I have no doubt he will be convincing that his stance is the right one. Just trusting others see it that way.
 
A point I always stressed to DSes was that there is a substantial number of people who do stupid things. Repeat offenders usually do not go down alone. Deliberately or inadvertently, they tend to take others with them.

Your DS sounds like the perfect wingman/battle buddy. One of my DSes is one. The other needed one throughout AROTC.
 
Good story. I would bet it helps rather than hurts. But, the best part of all is that he finally found the right sport--Rugby. All of the Academies have good programs

Hah! Last Olympics he was so intrigued with rugby we watched the entire women's tournament. He knows he may not get much play time but can't wait to get on the field for training in October.

If he hasn't already, have him YouTube the "All Blacks". Also advise him to check the military regs on haircuts and tattoos before he gets any crazy ideas.

He has already told me no identifiable markers will appear on his skin, persec and all that. Lol!
 
DCMom, not to hijack this thread but DS joined the rugby team spring semester of plebe year and describes the team and players as a brotherhood. We met a couple of the youngster players on their way to spring break, seems to be a good group of young men. Good luck to your DS.

ds played bball his life until Jr. year high school when he switched to rugby. best choice ever. Kind of like when they the say the academy and the student find each other and find the right fit, well, that is the same for rugby. it finds the right guys. (and gals) USMA has a great program. Up and coming. Academy is fully behind it. Navy is probably second with USAFA third. USCG if 4 just because of size. usmma is 5th right now, but, they have a lot of young talent, and with new team leadership taking over next year, this team will make people's heads turn. There are probably 4 or more high school all state type players that will be 3/c and 4/c next fall. No reason usmma should be at the top of their league next fall. and, the usmma/uscga match in the fall should be very competitive.
 
Love stories like this. DS really does thrive in each brotherhood he participates in, but football, lax and rugby seem to have a stronger more deep trust than most other things he does.
