Dropped the Kid off for IDay in June 2015. 61/2 years latter she's finally got her feet wet. I received an underway email via Navy.mil from her this morning, asking me for a favor.

"Dad can you send me stuff to read on what's going on in Africa? or, Economics, Etc.." Nothing having to do with XYZ (country) or ABC (region) PLZ! I am eyeballs deep in technical/Geo-political information related to the mission area 12+hrs a day"

My first thought was to buy her a digital subscription to 'The Economist"------but then remembered she doesn't have regular internet access to view; what about newsletters to her aboard ship Non-DoD inbox?

Can mail box Horratio.HornblowerENS@(ship DD--, CVN--, LST--).Navy.Mil receive newsletters while underway, just as it receives my emails? If so, newsletters would be way better than cutting/pasting text to my emails to her.

Anybody have experience with this kinda thing?

Thanks for reading, and thanks for any response.

Best:

It’s a shame re digital access, because the Economist is hands down the best layman’s publication on global affairs. I discovered it when living abroad, and nothing educated me better about why the world is the way it is. 🤔

DD will be able to tell you what digital access she has. You can then figure it out. Maybe give her a gift card she can order what she is most interested in.

I recommend the Early Bird updates from defense.com, daily digest of military news and current issues. Free. It’s the successor to the original Early Bird, published by DoD public affairs folks from 1948-2013.

@Just Dad happy to hear the updates of your DD and her new adventure. So beautiful that she still seeks your counsel. Keep us in the loop.

Yes, unless the emails have something that is flagged by a mail filter as spam and dropped--very unlikely if it's reputable.

Alternatively, commercial email accounts should still be accessible via web under normal circumstances, if she's wary about mixing up the work email with personal stuff. Low bandwidth option, of course.
