I am a medical turnback from the class of 2022 at the Air Force Academy and will be returning for the class of 2023. I have already gone through basic training and the entire application process. If you have any questions or concerns regarding your DD’s, DS’s, or personal experience, feel free to ask. P.S. a large part of basic training is the surprise factor, therefore, I will not provide many spoilers or other information that may get you into trouble or negatively affect your experience.

I received an appointment to USAFA (C/O 2023) last week and will be attending BCT this summer, any advice on ways to prepare physically/mentally/emotionally?

And best general advice you would give for starting BCT?

Thanks!

Congratulations on the appointment.

Take the physical preparation recommendations in the Appointee Booklet seriously - you will be pushed physically, mentally, and emotionally but if you are not struggling to keep up physically, then it is easier to cope with the other stress elements.

Also, remember that you will fail at some point during BCT -- it is not the failure that matters, but your resilience and how you recover from this failure that will count.

This is from my experience with AF BMT as an enlisted Airman, but for what you are asking I believe that it applies. Physically, run be in great shape it'll make it suck less but it'll still suck. Know some recovery exercises or stretches to minimize potential injury.
Mentally, get used to functioning with very little sleep and high stress.
Emotionally, you are going to get yelled at no matter what you do so try to follow instructions the best you can. Sometimes two instructors will purposely give you contradictory instructions so just try your best. As long as you are trying and are not actively asking to quit you will make it through.

Great advice. Just to let you know this forum is anonymous and you should contact a moderator to change your name immediately, @Carrson_Ford

Congratulations! FMHS is right, physical preparation is important. You don’t want to be the person in your squad that holds everyone up. There will be a lot of information that you will need to memorize (quotes, passages, etc.) especially names so if you can practice that you should be fine. As for general advice, overestimate what you will be doing. Convince yourself it will be harder than it will be because it will give you a pleasant surprise and you will be better prepared when you arrive.

I just finished up my prep year at the usafa prep school, and was supposed to be c/o 24, but I recently had an injury that takes up to 9 months to recover from. I am a football recruit as well. I’ve been told by coaches and trainers that i’d have to reapply to next years class. I’ve yet to speak directly to admissions, waiting for them to return my phone call.

How did the medical turnback process work for you? Did you have to redo the entire application? Did you attend a university or cc while you were home? If so did you have to include those grades on your new application?

Wonderful advice, thank you for that!
