Your son isn't applying for every open slot in the next class - he can only apply for those slots earmarked for his race and gender. You said before that his SAT was a 1350, not a 1400. You said he's a white male, not a recruited athlete. He is applying for what is probably the most competitive slot at CGA (only 54-60 slots, including last year's white male non athlete CGAS kids) and amongst that group he is likely entirely average. Since his numbers would appear to make him too qualified for CGAS, the number of slots he is actually eligible for is less than the 54-60, but since demographics of CGAS arent available we don't know how many less.

Females are high 30's to 40ish% and rising - I am sure they would like to get it to 50%. Minorities are about 35% and stable across the last few admission cycles, but you could see them rise if there are sufficient qualified applicants. These numbers demonstrate the difficulty of obtaining an appointment to CGA. Including CGAS, of the 280 who accept appointments, approximately 140 are athletic recruits, so if you aren't an athletic recruit, you are already down to 140 available slots, which includes CGAS spots. Based on your son's numbers, he is overqualified for CGAS. For the major demographic groups the available slots would be as follows:

36 white female,
20 minority female,
54 white male,
30 minority male

My simple math assumes that the percentages of female and minority appointments for recruited athletes and those coming in from CGAS is the same as it is within the general appointment pool. I have no idea whether that is actually the case, but it probably doesn't vary much. My math also assumes that appointments from CGAS are also 50% athletic recruits. I would guess the number is actually higher, but that's just a guess. If CGAS is 75% recruited athletes, and the proportion of females and minorities remains the same, available slots to non athletes would be approximately

40 white female,
22 minority female,
60 white male,
33 minority male.

Presumptions about the percentage of athletes in CGAS and gender and minority proportions within the CGAS and athlete pools aside, the data shows that each applicant is competing for only a handful of slots, as the individual candidate simply isn't eligible for a demographic they don't belong to.

I should also note that these numbers are based on the 280 accepted appointments. There are close to 400 offered appointments, including CGAS. We know that about 310 are offered a full appointment, and 220 accept, along with another 60 coming in after completing the CGAS program. Unfortunately, we don't know anything about the demographics of those who were offered an appointment, but declined. We also don't know what percentage of them were recruited athletes. Further extrapolating numbers with so much guesswork could be done, but isn't very helpful.

I’ll post this final comment and then go to another thread if I post any more. A few comments:

- my whole point in coming here was to learn from others going through the same experience. as people have pointed out, the vast majority of applicants are rejected. So I would expect lots of people on this forum to be asking similar questions

- I don’t intend to take anything away from accepted applicants. Congratulations! It’s the experience of a lifetime.

In the post that I am directly replying to, this comment is hopefully not true “Your son isn't applying for every open slot in the next class - he can only apply for those slots earmarked for his race and gender” That would be blatant discrimination. I can understand recruitment targets based on race and gender - that might drive spending more to recruit in school districts or other areas that produce high performing diversity candidates. But you can’t just reject a 1600 SAT white male and accept a minority female with 1100 SAT with all else being equal. That would be blatant discrimination and grounds for a very public lawsuit.

There are many ways to create a diverse officer corps. CGA is one, NAPS is another, OCS is another. When I went into Electrical Engineering my 3/c year, there were 38 cadets. By the time we got to graduation, we graduated 12 into the officer corps. The rest flunked out because they couldn’t do the work. We should be spending our time Recruiting kids who can do the work so that our homeland security leaders 20 years from now are experts in cyber, signal processing, naval architecture, and other disciplines that will make the Coast Guard the preeminent maritime service In the world.

So for my final post, I am asking for data on the kids who weren’t accepted. I would be grateful to anyone willing to share.

I think this is a very "Spot On" breakout. Thank you! It speaks to how competitive/hard the USCGA admissions really is. (IMHO the hardest of any Federal Service Academy) Congrats to all who have an appointment!

You are wrong. Your “very public lawsuit” would be dismissed.

I definitely don't want to fight with anyone on here, and maybe you are a lawyer/judge and know a lot that i don't, but the group that organized the Harvard lawsuit are well-funded and well-organized. They have other cases moving forward in Texas and North Carolina in addition to the Harvard case being appealed. But they don't have a federal institution yet. So A1Janitor, i'll take that wager.

I am quite knowledgeable about these cases. So knowledgeable in fact that I have successfully sued in federal court in a civil rights case - the equal protection clause of the fourteenth amendment - without an attorney

You are not a protected class ... a minority. The Harvard students are minorities.

But more importantly, you don’t even know why your son was rejected. You are here searching for reasons. What if you get to court and find out their defense is his interview was bad? Or the competition was better.

I don’t want this to be a fight between you and me. I respect you and your family for your service. And I wish you and your son the best.

Accepting this bet would be pointless. In the end, you wouldn’t want this as a mark on your great record.

For those on the list awaiting a medical waiver, my daughter got an email today from the USCGA DODMERB liaison saying she had received a full medical waiver. They said her DODMERB portal should be updated by Monday, and she has a new letter in her Bears Den Account offering a full appointment (in place of the conditional appointment she had before). We weren't expecting any movement on the waiver until next week at the very earliest, so I was surprised when my daughter called me at work to tell me the good news. Good luck to the others hoping for a waiver.

Great news! Hoping we receive same result soon, as do the others here waiting!

Not everyone was required an interview. My son was not. He has been deferred. How is this mandatory? We were told at cadet for a day that it is not. Only if they think they have missed something or to be sure.
Just fyi, I don't want to make any comment on the bigger conversation, but it doesn't seem interviews are mandatory quite yet, as my DS did not have one and did get a conditional acceptance. Just wanted to reassure you with my data point of 1, not to aggravate the conversation, I promise, but just because I know facts and opinions all get mixed up so easily in these discussions, it can be hard to keep track. Or at least it was for me being totally new to all this. Any kid who even makes it through this application process if going to do well in life somewhere, that I know, so don't let go of how proud you are of your kid!

My DS was deferred. We have accepted decision and he contacted his AO to see where he can improve his candidate profile. He decided to continue the process and continue to chase his dream.

Enough with number crunching and negative comments on this thread. Congratulations to appointees and their families!
Good luck!

Was locked out of AIM also. Was told AIM was for kids who don’t know what the Academy or CG is about. He’s third generation. He knows.

It does make me feel better to hear that your child’s scores are higher.

any acceptances that were lower?

i got the alumni bulletin last month and his scores were upper 75% for the class for the class of 2023. Its part of why i am shocked.
My DS2?was my DS1’s aimster.

Ha, he was the City Manager of Lewis City...likely they did. He enjoyed the experience but came back saying he was 100% certain that he did not want to ever pursue a career in politics - Smart kid!

My DS also learned that he was not going to be interested in being a “politician” as well.
