USMA Class of 2017 Acceptance Thread

Mooradian, Please don't get discouraged - first not all congressional reps call their appointees; second, only ~ 500 went out today, that leaves a lot of slots still open and you don't know where you are on the NWL; third, the mail hasn't arrived yet... those envelopes are monday/tuesday. So hang in there. There's time and some room still left.

Heard from a friend this evening this was one of the most competitive classes ever... As in, dramatic increase in app volume and average ACT score. Is there any truth to this, or was my friend just a bit disgruntled from not receiving an appointment?

I received a phone message during basketball practice. I returned the call after practice and Senator Harkin informed me of the offer. Walking on Cloud 9 ever since. Hope everyone hears similar news soon.

Runt....

I would have to agree with your friend on this matter. The nations economy is still struggling, colleges are getting more expensive, graduates are not finding the jobs they hope for. So the small sacrifice of service is the price you pay.

Just Level setting for this thread

Just to set expectations, the vast , vast majority of the Appointment Offers (the BFE) are being mailed right now, a few recruited athletes may have received offers since the Academy has to compete against "National Signing Day" and some soldiers may have received offers as well a few minority / under-represented groups. As of now, even the Field Force is blind. The portal has been taken down in anticipation of the deluge of calls and inquiries over the next couple of weeks. It is a waiting game now for all of us. Keep checking the mail box and good luck to all. One last thing - remember that a Nomination is not a guarantee of an appointment - they are 2 distinctly different things.

Do we think a principle nominee would be hearing in this wave of appointments?

Thanks for the info jr. So to be clear...what is the difference between the nomination and the appointment? Good luck everybody!

A nomination is required to have a chance of appointment.

In other words, a nomination is one of many requirements needed to compete for an appointment.

DS just received a call from Congressman Posey informing him that he will be receiving an appointment to WP!

from NMMI to West Point

Posted last night, February 22, on the NMMI Facebook page was a congratulations announcement to 2 NMMI cadets "for getting accepted to the United States Military Academy at West Point."

Multiple people can have a nomination from the same congressperson or senator, but only one will be offered an appointment. The other 3Q with that same nomination source are competing for a national spot, which is often more difficult.

Just a reminder for those candidates getting appointments (who plan to accept them): there's a facebook page for your moms and dads: West Point Moms and West Point Dads.

Heard from a friend this evening this was one of the most competitive classes ever... As in, dramatic increase in app volume and average ACT score. Is there any truth to this, or was my friend just a bit disgruntled from not receiving an appointment?

No idea how this year compares to others.

My 1400 SAT, 3.7 GPA (top 20% of his class), Boy's State, Eagle Scout (SPL), AP Scholar Award (for all 3, 4, and 5's on his numerous AP exams), X-country/Track varsity letters, good CFA, medically qualified son contacted his RC a few weeks ago and the response was:

"Right now, you are not competitive for an appointment" ... and a standard blurb about civilian and military prep schools - a gut punch he took with his head held high, though I know he was very disappointed.

My son had only a Presidential nomination. Competition was extremely tough for a MOC nomination in Northern VA, as it always is.

I think it's probably accurate to say that a lot of really fine, fully-qualified young men and women may not receive appointments.

It's important to heed the advice from those who say "have a plan B and plan C." My son wants to be an infantry officer in the Army or USMC. USMA is out, still waiting on USNA (though he's not optimistic based on USMA response), and plan B was applying for ROTC scholarships.

He recieved and accepted a 4-yr Army ROTC scholarship to Virginia Tech, College of Engineering.

His plan C were the other schools to which he applied and joining ROTC once there.

I'm proud that he's kept the destination foremost in his thoughts - serving his country as a military officer - and worried less about the road travelled to get there.

Congrats to all the new USMA appointees! Big bites!

Plans B, C and D

Having a Plan B, C and even a D is a very good idea. There will be a LOT of disappointed, very highly qualified students over the next few weeks. My DS is on his 3rd try (in a very competitive area), has completed 2 years of college on an ROTC scholarship, but has thrown his hat into this years' ring... Is willing to walk away from 2 years of college (3.9 GPA in college) to get in... That gives you an idea of the level of competition out there.

A nomination is a requirement to be considered for an appointment. That means you have to have a nomination to even be looked at by the Admissions Board for an appointment.

Getting a nomination simply "checks a box" on the long hit list of qualifying items that the Admissions Board looks at.

Hope this helps clear things a bit

Just it my BFE in the mail!!! So happy can't wait to see my fellow classmates on July 1st!
