USMMA and Navy EOD

I am currently applying to the USNA and USMMA classes of 2027. I plan to pursue a career as a Navy EOD officer after I graduate. I know that USNA typically has around 15 billets or so each year for EOD, and would likely be the best option. However, I really think I'd rather attend USMMA than USNA, because of the sea year, and the smaller class sizes. Does anyone have any information on how difficult it is to be selected for an EOD cruise and later an EOD Billet from USMMA. Are there any slots historically? Do many even apply out of USMMA? The academy requires you to apply for, and, if offered, accept a reserve commission....depends on the service needs.

Benefit of USMMA is you can switch what reserve commission you want to apply for if your post graduate desires change while at the academy.

Not sure of the answer to your question. I can tell you that the USNA MIDN that want EOD are involved with screeners etc for nearly 2 years. DS is a 1C at USNA and past summer he did an EOD cruise. He said that there were several ROTC MIDN in the EOD cruise...but they DOR'd in a couple days. DS has been working at EOD for two years now...its his #1 on his service selection just recently submitted. He's been running with a sand baby for two years now, doing pool stuff and more. He and some other MIDN who want EOD have been working hard...Apparently there will be 15 or 16 chosen from a final 1C group of about 27. DS says all the 27 are qualified in his opinion. Another advantage at USNA is that there are typically 2-3 EOD officers assigned to the Yard. Good luck to you.

Imo, you should attend wherever will best set you up for your desired service career. Not the campus, as that’s only 4 years. There isn’t a better development program for those elite, physical EOD type programs than USNA. The structure, support and training are part of your program/day.

I sat in USNA classes for parents weekend a month ago. 20 max. They were all small and intimate. I don’t think that should be a deciding factor.

No comment on the sea year….other than how does that help you with your goal of EOD? And lastly, keep in mind not everyone gets their ‘first choice’. Which academy will provide a good 2nd choice for you?

There is definitely a path from USMMA to EOD. I know a handful of mids who have successfully taken that route. Those who desire EOD at USMMA (an admittedly small number) work out with other special warfare candidate mids who aspire to become SEALS. You definitely have to be highly motivated. There is some great advice in the posts above. BUT, given the highly particular nature of your inquiry, you ought to reach out to USMMA admissions to see if they can connect you to someone who can answer the question with firsthand information. Of course, as @Don't Give Up the Ship notes, EOD is a hard service selection to achieve from USNA. It seems unlikely it will be easier to achieve though perhaps it will be similarly achievable from USMMA. If nothing else, it would be wise of you to gain insight into how sea year fits into planning for this career path. Good luck.

To pursue the Navy EOD path at USMMA one must attend the new NSW screener in Coronado, CA their second class year. Upon completion of the screener, you will then put in a package to the department of Naval Science at the academy, and then based on the number of applicants and the number of slots given to the school you will be selected to go to cruise. During my time here I have not yet seen anyone get picked up, but the EOD slots for the most recent cruise have not been given out yet. Also during my time here, historically, there have been 1-2 applicants per year for NAVY EOD. Hope this helps.

One of my son's class 2021 commissioned as a Naval EOD officer, only one applied. You will have to be able to pass a navy dive physical and selected by the board. Yes, there are slots available.

I know of a few mids here at KP that went to both EOD cruise AND SOAS. If you want it, it's there for you. Keep up good grades and stay out of trouble. The Naval Science Dept. will fight tooth and nail for you as long as you keep your record clean.
