USMMA over the other Academy's

Captain on my ship has 40 years at sea, over 20 as master on tankers says the military is the better choice now. I agree with him 100%. USMMA is an outdated and obsolete institution to say the least.
After reading most of your posts, it seems to me [I'm sure others have noticed it too] that you have a 'visceral love' for Kings Point and the Maritime industry in general. Further, you add very little that is positive here. I'm not exactly sure why that is.. Would you care to explain?

Everyone has a path. It may not be the same desire to attend one academy over another.

There is no academy that is better than another...Every cadet has a path they choose and as parents we need to support their decision with a positive message.

Got it, I took your statement as a general statement of one path over another. My bad

Care to defend that statement?
Yes, for my son it makes sense. He wants to fly and if he gets accepted into USNA or USAFA, then that would be the better route. He's then going onto flight school with long time friends from the academy, and those friends can help you through your military career. It's very political when you get up there in rank, and knowing people is a huge plus.

But to add on...I think it's AWESOME that he got accepted into the USMMA. It's a great academy and he'll still have the opportunity to fly afterwards.

None of these statements are exclusive to the DoD Academies over KP. The whole ringknocker thing is vastly overplayed.

If your son's main goal is to achieve a certain rank in the service I know the Navy (not sure about USAF) has reams of written guidance on promotion boards and selection boards. How to set yourself up for success is no secret and relies very little on relationships and commissioning source.

I have successfully managed several promotion boards and selection boards myself, having been selected for unit command twice as a junior officer. I was also successful in helping my sailors navigate senior enlisted selection boards and commissioning boards. I can tell you the commissioning route is highly highly highly overrated. Yes, who you know helps but having a connection from the Academy is less far far far less useful than having a long term record of sustained superior performance over a variety of jobs. Bloom where you are planted.

The more important relationships to career progression are made after commissioning, not during college/academy years. A more important relationship is that with your reporting senior and commanding officer. Your son's CO will not grade an officer not make promotion recommendations solely based on commissioning source.

Probably the only job where being a USNA grad is a determining factor is Superintendent of USNA.

Good thing this is a forum instead of a ship. That would be an e-mail to the DPA/Personnel/HR/Probably direct to management.

And you'd probably be just the kind of guy that would send it too..

Absolutely would. Company would probably thank me for saving them from the future liability of an old man throwing sexual innuendo around.

Okay...members...watch the terms used in postings. I changed one, and I'm sure you're aware of it. Passions can run high, emotions, pride, whatever, but please remember our forums are for the family/students, first and foremost. We're not on the bridge, quarterdeck, mess hall, flight line, etc.

Thank you.

Steve
