USNA Application Status Change: "Conditional (LOA)"

How'd I guess... did he get an LOA first? If so how long until his waiver came through?
He got his LOA before his nomination. He failed the medical after.

IIRC - the waiver was requested immediately. It took about 30 days for waiver approval - Superintendent had to sign off.

Thank you!! So my DS scoop is he has 2 secured Noms (one is presidential), an LOA posted on Monday and he was DQ'd with color deficiency last week (we knew he would be). The waiver review begins automatically according to what we were told for color deficiency. I am just curious if anyone has had this scenerio and how long it took if it indeed happened that an Appointment was given.

If an LOA happened after they knew about the dq, I would have read into that as a positive sign. They could have not given the LOA and walked away, right?

It is hard to compare timelines. Do they collect the colorblind kids up and make a decision which 15-20 they want to legally appoint towards the end? What if there are colorblind candidates they prefer but don’t know about until medicals are all in?

Did you your DS get the Appointment in a March/April time frame. We are just so early with it all. I honestly don't know if Admissions knows he is color deficient. Not sure when they see all that.... it's in God's hands!

Iirc - submitted medical end of December. Dq immediately. About a month later he got the waiver signed. End of January - beginning of February.

Did you have to do anything to get the waiver started or was it automatic? Did he get the Appointment end of January beginning of February? Sorry to ask all these questions. You are giving me facts which is very helpful.

There is nothing for the candidate to do. It was automatic. He got the offer of appoint beginning of February.

Keep in mind these are my son’s facts. Which may or may not be meaningful to anyone else.

A1Janitor has been a long time member and great contributor over the years. His DS’s experience was one we all watched. With your DS being found color deficient, mentally prepare for the long haul. His DS was probably one of the few, if not the only, I have seen with color deficiency get an appt earlier in the process (Feb actually is right on the middle of the high admissions cycle). Often, USNA will wait and see how many with color deficiency are 2Q and then figure out who they want to submit waivers for. This often happens later in the process. I know your DS has a LOA now and hopefully that means he will get the waiver. Fingers crossed it happens earlier, but no guarantees. Also, there is nothing he has to do for the waiver, USNA will initiate it.

Cross posted with A1.

What is your sons 2nd nom? It’s early for MOC’s.

Keep in mind, presidential noms are limited in how many can be charged to them. He is competing still for that, and the SA assigns those.

The takeaway, is to still prepare for alternate plans. Even having siblings in attendance doesn’t give him a one-up (which was a subject brought up kn my own BGO training).

Rooting for him!!

For what it's worth, does LOA help with a nomination? Especially in a competitive state or district. MOC office states that they have all LOA information from academies.

My son called the MOC office and told them. They thanked him and said they would pass it to the committee. So everyone knew. (Not a competitive district so it didn’t matter).

If they told my son they have all LOA information, I would have recommended he confirmed with them that they specifically had his. And I would have told him to bring copies.

Could it help with nomination? Depends on the district and the committees - how they do things. It certainly can’t hurt.

I am just a parent - so I am sure this differs from the military perspective. We have good BGOs and retired folks on committees here that can answer this from their perspective.

This happened to me on Monday as well. Have you received an email about it yet? (I haven’t)
No further information for me either, but since I only checked my portal this morning, I am not sure when over the past week it might have been updated. I didn't get a status update email or anything like that.

My kid didn’t have an LOA but I did advise him to take copies of his most recent resume with him to his MOC and SA interviews. If he had an LOA I would have advised him to politely attach it as an attachment in an email to the POC for each MOC and bring hand copy to interviews.

Based on last year, at least for conditional LOA, you should receive an email from the Dean stated that the offer is contingent upon completion of the remaining items by xxx date (I believe it was end of January for my candidate last year), with an exception for Medical.

Not for my kid, it didn't. And he got it before two of his three interview panels for the MoCs. And he told the other one that had already done the panel that he had just received the LOA,

Didn't matter. None of them gave him a nomination, even knowing he had an LOA with the only remaining condition being a nom.

He did not get an appointment that cycle, even with the LOA.

(And we're in the same District as Annapolis, and there were well over 225+ kids vying for the nomination slate).

Thanks. Mine does not one yet. That has been said, unless LOAs given out spread across regions evenly, we don’t know how many your kid competed against. Potentially your kid was assessed against dozens of LOAs. Could that be true?
