USNA Class of 2023 Do-It-Yourself Appointment Thread

Did you completed your application with nominations?

What does this mean ? USNA Admissions application and MOC nominations processes are two separate processes . Completing your MOC nomination application and getting an LOA have nothing to do with each other (in fact, the most common condition of an LOA is probably getting a nomination).

The LOA discussion has strayed far from the original intent of this Thread .. I would suggest an separate discussion on LOA's , or better yet, reading all the old thread and simply recognize that there really isn't any magic recipe for who gets and LOA , and who does. Remember, the objective is an APPOINTMENT, not an LOA --

Thanks for reply.
I know that admissions and nominations is two sperate process. But our BGO told me recently admissions issues to candidates with nominations.
Just curious about it.
Also want to think if he can get it LOA .how long it will take?

A candidate must be 3Q + nom to get an appointment. An LOA is a nice to have but not a guarantee. Candidates every year with an LOA end up being medically DQ or not securing a nom. Usually LOAs are given because a candidate doesn’t have a nom or medically cleared yet. USNA does not publish how they evaluate candidates for an LOA nor how many each year they give. Many of us sort of speculate that a few hundred a year are given, but that is just a guess of seeing things year in and year out and zero proof. An LOA can be given at anytime. They tend to be issued earlier in the process as more and more candidates get noms LOAs decrease as they have all the requirements to get an appointment. Focus on the end game... an appointment. Once an appointee arrives at USNA no one cares about any of this. Every is the same regardless of perfect SATs, LOA or appointment off the wait list the week before I Day.

My son received his LOA last month. Maybe it was for athletics, maybe it was for academics. We don't have a clue and frankly do not care. All we know is that we are very happy for him. The only thing left for him is the nomination. While we are confident he will earn a nomination, my son realizes that there is no guarantee, which is why he is still applying to many civilian schools as well. The fact that word about a nomination might not get out until spring doesn't help with sleepless nights.

I can tell you first hand. Getting an LOA is a very exciting moment for your child, but that excitement fades away rather quickly. An LOA is not an appointment.

I apologize for keeping this thread off-topic. I just want people to realize once-and-for-all that an LOA is not an appointment. I look forward to seeing real appointments be listed here soon. Good luck to all of you and your children!

+1 to @brewmeist. The excitement of receiving an LOA is wonderful — and fleeting. It’s a conditional offer, contingent on something, which could be related to nominations, DODMERB, CFA, test scores, some completely oddball question out of leftfield...none of which is a given. I know that after the initial glee of my DD’s LOAs faded, the stress level actually rose, knowing that there were still hurdles to clear. As many here have said, the appointment is the thing!

I think this is the latest we have ever gone without an appointment posted... but still early in the game and nothing to read in to. For candidates... this is a marathon. Most don’t get an LOA. Do not panic. Put together your best package, be proud you finished it and then focus on Plan Bs. At the end of the day if you can look yourself in the mirror and said you gave it your all... then be proud. Let the cards fall where they may. Good luck and try to enjoy senior year. Trust me, you only get it once.

Can the moderator change the quoted text in the above posts to remove the name from the appt list?

All appointees number their entry - helps us keep track of how many. The next appointee will be 2)

If you scroll to thread top, you’ll see the original directions and samples.
