USNA Class of 2027 Waiting and Speculating

Agree 100%.

I would only add it is a slap in the face of community colleges.

One of my best math teachers taught at a 2 year college. The class sizes are smaller, the material is the material. What matters is the student’s effort.

I did the tax return for a young lady that was going for free to Cornell for a PhD in nuclear physics. She told me a story about talking to the other students in her program about where they did their undergrad work. They laughed at her because she went to a little four year school. They all went to Harvard or Yale or MIT. I asked her how she got in - she said the small school was the right atmosphere to do well - she graduated as valedictorian with a perfect record.

Sometimes the waitlist to NAPs or a year of community college to develop academics and organizational skills is all it takes to turn a candidate into an officer.

The empirical data suggests this path works, and the Navy is behind it.

What if they aren’t ready for plan b - a good civilian college?
I will echo your statement on the math teacher. I was on the old GI Bill, which basically paid for books at most. Had to go into a remedial math course at the local CC, as I was >8 years post HS, and was never a great math student to being with. The instructor for the class was moonlighting in the evenings teaching math as he was a civilian ops research bubba at the nearby Army base. By far the best math teacher ever. Ironic thing is that he was a physics major.

I have two close friends that went to NAPS back in the 90’s….both attended USNA after and became Navy Seals. They both served on some very high level missions…(one of which got made into a movie with Tom Hanks the other extracted a few infamous Iraqis to Cuba). I don’t understand how one can be critical of the various paths these kids take as they all lead to service and defending our country in ways that we are all extremely grateful for.

TWE yesterday around noon for my DD. She said it felt like a punch in the gut, but found peace that the wait was finally over. Plan B moving ahead at supersonic speed now… as recruited athlete to USMMA! 24 hours of pure excitement: the DIII celebratory letter is ready for her signing day at school, TWIC in process, and the family ordered our fun school gear. Her USNA journey began before 9th grade at Summer STEM and her eyes never came off of Annapolis. As the saying goes, “shoot for the moon and even if you miss, you’ll land among the stars.” USNA isn’t her destiny but by giving it her all, she did earn an appointment to USMMA and a full 4 year ROTC MO scholarship.
I’ll be spending my time on the USMMA forum, but they are not nearly as fun(ny) and my virtual USNA friends- not sure anyone will appreciate chin splints jokes and magic 8 ball references. Wishing the class of 2027 the best in everything, wherever you find your destiny!
Congrats on USMMA! My son is a senior there and considers it the best academy!! She will love it plus the liberty to NYC is really fun! He has many great stories there and lots of tight friendships. Beat Coast Guard!! ⚓💙⛴️

Hey longtime lurker here. Just got the call from my congresswoman today that I have been appointed. I got the TWE last year, did NROTC and enrolled in plebe courses (calc, chem, etc) and it all paid off. I wish the best of luck to everyone still waiting, and know that a TWE does not mean the end of your academy ambitions.
Congrats! Every year I have offered encouragement to appointees like you and heartbroken TWEs. My son, a college reapplicant, is weeks away from commissioning and STILL (just this weekend!) says that the first turndown and a year of college was the best thing that ever happened to him. It was hard at the time but helped him do some soul searching and inspired hard work. The year of college and NROTC gave him an academic base and prepared him for military aspects of plebe summer. The year of maturity and learning how to live away from home was a huge bonus not only during PS but also plebe year.
Enjoy the next few months before plebe summer!

Congratulations on your appointment and on your commitment! This reply is please calling all help and advice and inspiration. How did you make this happen please? My son please needs advice on real tangible steps he can take starting now and through the year so that he does not get a turned down next year. He is determined to go to the USNA and be a navel officer for his whole career. A bit about him so you get the picture. He is a wrestler and in fantastic shape and almost maxed out the whole CFA, minus the run (7min) and the b-ball toss. Both of those he can practice and dominate at (I think under 6min mile and close to making b-ball throw). He has a 4.12 taking the absolute hardest classes in an extremely competitive Loudoun County (northern VA) high school (took 4 APs this year and all As). He coaches wrestling, tutors SAT, tutors math, and wrestles year round travel and captained both his HS and his travel team. He got 1390 SAT (took it 3 times, wants to get his math over 700 so will study hard and take it until he gets a higher score), 31 ACT (he’ll take this again and get math over 30). He wrote his BGO for some advice but hasn’t heard back; BGO believed he’d get appointed too. I heard USNA admissions will go through your app with you to direct you for next year. What other things can he do please? The hardest thing is to keep moving forward everyday positively. He still hasn’t heard in his NROTC (got a 98 ASVAB so only 1 pt for improvement). He only got into RPI for Nuclear Engineering but we can’t afford to send him unless he gets his NROTC. There are quite a few NROTC schools in Va, we have to find one with late or rolling admissions and try and get him there (any suggestions). Please any advice or things we aren’t looking at. He was too linear and we were too linear and we naively believed all the hype when he got that coveted Senatoral nomination (and given what everyone said). We were wrong and are now trying like heck to cast a wide net and get him back to where he wants to be, USNA. Thank you in advance for anyone’s help and advice and guidance! We please need small and big and detailed suggestions; literally any words of wisdom will help. Thanks again and good luck to all still chugging along!! I hope this might help some others here that got caught in the 12th purge:) love y’all and this forum!
My son was successful as a college reapplicant and is weeks from Commissioning! I have posted several times about his path and recommendations. Look back through my posts for some of that information. Best of luck this next year and make the most of the opportunities for growth and learning. Though it may be a hard pill to swallow at the time, the bonus year has its advantages.

If you read through the threads, you will see the caliber of students that applied to the C/O 2027. Some of the schools they were accepted to include Cornell, Notre Dame and Georgia Tech. Now, if you got accepted to those schools and then received a wait list offer to East Mississippi Community College, I would consider the wait list offer to be insulting.

If you think NAPS is not the equivalent to a community college education, try transferring the classes you take there to another institution such as Georgia Tech. (Even USNA doesn’t accept them.)
My kid applied this year; I know the caliber of applicants! They're all awesome. But I'll tell you and anyone else flat out- if a person was accepted to one of those prestigious schools you listed but sees the NAPS waitlist as an insult, then they have no business at the Academy. They're not "in it" for the right reason so they can go to one of those fine schools instead & make room for those who really want it.
I'm done wasting my time on you. You're either a sour bitter adult with no value to add here, or you're a sour bitter candidate who clearly just wants to stir the pot. You've done nothing but insult NAPSters, Comm colleges, and now Mississippi and Mississippians.
Farewell.

I’m sorry for all the rejections and waitlisting. Your kids made it this far and that is a testimony to them. Give them a few days to deal with the rejection and they will all be fine and go on to do great things.

I’m seeing a lot of waitlisting for NAPS. To me, that seems like an insult. Would your kids accept a waitlist to a community college? That’s in essence what they are offering.
I don’t think a NAPS waitlist is quite as you describe it. NAPS is a road to USNA with a little extra prep. It’s an honor to receive this opportunity. The Navy wants these people and is investing a year into them to help them. And of course there should be a waitlist as there are only a certain number of available slots and not all offered a NAPS appointment will accept. Respectfully, I disagree with your assessment.

Not to mention it's the closest thing to a golden ticket to a service academy, which accepts anywhere between 7-12 percent of all applicants. If it was a "community college," it may be the best one on the planet.

Thanks for sharing! We will check your posts. My son will reapply.

Like many of you, we saw the disappointing portal status update today - ‘Turned Down.’ A softer blow than ‘Rejected’ but nonetheless the status carries with it the same hopeless finality. The USNA 2027 train has stopped for our DS. I’m now getting on a new train that has a fabulous destination - looking forward to these final weeks with our DS before he heads off to Texas A&M College of Engineering on a NROTC Scholarship. Will he reapply or will he love his college experience? Who knows. In many ways USNA has been the crazy train, and we didn’t have any issues with nom’s or DoDMER or waivers. If DS gets back on the crazy train I will likely not be a passenger. Once is enough. Not whatever happens, He will be a naval officer, fulfilling his dream. Best wishes to all the candidates and mamas and daddy’s.
When you are able - please DM me - our DS is on the same ride and I was hoping to connect them Might make TAMU connections possible.

Turned Down 4/12/23 9:00 AM

After months of seeing CPR, I was finally given a response. The wait was worse than anything else, but I am comforted now that it is over. I can now start falling back on my Plan Bs. I’m thinking of re-applying next year, but I’m leaning towards no.

Wishing everyone who applied this year nothing but the best. Whether you got a BFE or a TWE, I’m proud of you all nonetheless. Just completing the application is a big achievement worthy of commendation and respect. Those who got in, make the best of it! Make us all proud; we’ll be rooting for you.

It was an honor going through this process with some of USA’s finest.
Beat Army!

Peace 😎✌️

IMHO, NAPS is THE golden ticket. They like you so much and want you to succeed so much that they PAY YOU for an extra year to increase the chances of you COMPLETING your Service Academy journey. They’re willing to make an extra year of investment in you. Having had one son to USNA vis NAPS, I can say with some experience that it’s not just 13th grade. It’s a way for a candidate to strengthen some of the many area in which a candidate is evaluated. The Service Academy admissions process is not simply a GPA/SAT race. Some at NAPS candidates had ZERO student or sports leadership experience, some had no varsity sports experience, some were Super-strong in English/reading but weaker in Math, etc. I realize this is a major ego thing to many kids (and more often Parents) but make no mistake, it is an awesome “get”.

Here is the Accession pdf in case you could not get it.
I downloaded your version and am seeing the same issue as when I download it from the portal. Does anyone else have a copy that works?
