USNA Class of 2028 Waiting and Speculating

First of all congratulations!!! @kerndog1 and @BC2233 I am very excited for you!! My DS is also a reapplicant and from PA. I was curious as to which district you come from and also if you were in NROTC? It seems most of the reapplicants aren’t posting that they were in ROTC. Thank you so much!! If you don’t want to answer I understand that too.

New member, lurker for the past cycle, and USNA '22 DS dad. Younger DS had the opportunity to watch older DS thrive at USNA and had/has strong interest in following in his path. We are VA-11 so had a bird's eye view of four great years at Navy and Navy T&F, Navy FB season tix holders, etc. (great for us, much tougher for DS.) All of this was new to the older DS and us, he was a late comer to USNA path, but it drew him in from SS to application to admission. USNA was the only SA he applied to. He was LOA, MOC nom, made the tough decision to go Navy, then never looked back. In hindsight I can't imagine a better environment or outcome for him.

It's been a much tougher road for younger DS, not quite as strong on grades, SATs, or athletics. Applied to USNA and USAFA. Rec'd LOA from USAFA on 25 Dec, 5 days after TWE from MOC of no noms to USNA or USAFA. Then Sen TWEs slowly followed. Along the way learned more about the nom's process here on SAF than ever imagined. No LOA from USNA. In contact with USNA T&F coaches, but not a blue-chip recruit. DS stayed in contact with admissions at USAFA and USNA. We all stayed painfully patient (and off the forums...) helping him work on plans B, C, and D, which included AF and NROTC along with plans to reapply to class of '29 if no appointments, redshirt D1 to improve T&F times, etc.

Lots of challenges along the way with other plans, waitlists, deferrals, etc. and had started to resolve himself to plans C/D when VP Nom for USAFA came through on 20 March, big celebration and sigh of relief, back to plan A1&2! What a roller coaster... It's an incredible option and honor, and I'd have to say that post SS (he did both Navy and AF SS) he was leaning USAFA. While he has a highly coveted appointment to USAFA, I think now in his heart he's still leaning USNA. He heard from USNA admissions this week that he should hear final determination in the next 3 weeks, so he's still in the game, but with no noms and no LOA it remains the long shot. We're super excited that plan A2 is an awesome one, but still holding out hope for USNA.

Thanks for sharing your journey. Fingers crossed for USNA!!

Does anyone know if candidates have rejected yet or is that held for towards the end in a few mass batches?

According to some threads, some applicants have been rejected, some also have been selected for NAPS/foundation.

My MOC said no one from my district has been appointed yet, so I ASSUME the academy is still shuffling through applicants and reviewing slates etc.

For USMA, the top pick in our slate is awaiting a medical waiver. No one else in the slate can be appointed until that's resolved. Waiver limbo by proxy. Might be a similar situation...

Approaching the 15th with a nomination from OH District 7 to USNA, a FFS offer from USAFA (Senatorial + OH Dist. 7 Nomination to USAFA), and a NROTC Full Scholarship to Purdue or Ohio State. Stacked all my nominations to USAFA but still have the nom. from OH 7. My NROTC scholarship advisor is starting to put on the pressure about accepting my scholarship (Do not have to deny/accept until May!!). Still medically disqualified on USNA portal. Submitted AMI for USAFA and NROTC back in February. Hoping that AMI will supplement for my waiver to USNA and I do not have to play that game again (hoping admissions saw that). Summer STEM & Seminar attendee. Worked my butt off to put myself in this position (32 ACT, top 5% grad class, AP, etc.).

Anyone in a similar position with similar stats? Feels like USNA has not appointed a bunch of the class of 2028 yet. If I receive an appointment, I will most likely accept it. I came to love USNA's campus and culture over USAFA, but the long-term goal is to fly (no specific aircraft in mind). Solidified my decision through the gritty, but amazing USNA Summer Seminar. I feel like the structure and leadership at USNA are more worthy, and a lot of great conversations about the Naval Flight School training. Seems that if you don't fly for USAF, it's all administrative work. Would like to hear some feedback and opinions to guide my thought process. If you have gone through Naval Flight Training, please PM!

Why not accept your scholarship? You can do that, further the work on the waiver for them, and if it’s your alternate plan if something else doesn’t come through, it makes sense.

People can accept their RORC scholarship, and change their mind. Very common. Its also wise, imo, to have that moving forward, and your on their radar (may, or may not make a difference if an injury occurs for example after accepting).

They are probably wanting to make NSI assignments, and figure out their own situations for the incoming class.

Maybe I missed something (I didn’tt quite follow what you have, and what you do t have, in hand). But that doesn’t matter. Accept what you have, and change if your #1 comes through.

Congrats!!

jdi19 is correct - my DD accepted a NROTC scholarship first week of Feb 2023 (her plan B), was planning on the summer bootcamp at Great Lakes, then informed them she would not be needing it as she was appointed to NAPS beginning of Apr 2023. The Va Tech NROTC folks were happy for her and held no grudges, of course.

I have accepted my FFS Scholarship so I could have prep school preference, but I have not accepted my NROTC scholarship. I know my Falcon is not binding, but I fear my NROTC scholarship is binding. Regardless, I still have the scholarship for NROTC, and I do not believe it will be given up to anyone til I decline or the deadline passes. I am more likely to go the FFS route than ROTC because I know I want to pursue an academy route, and the style of an academy is preferred for my own personal growth. I believe I could get out of the NROTC scholarship, but I also don't want to be bound to that decision.

In addition, I am already medically qualified via USAFA and US Navy ROTC. My medical has not been initiated by admissions at USNA.

You can absolutely "return" your NROTC scholarship if you gain an appointment to USNA. Appointment to a SA is one of the specific reasons listed on the form you received with the NROTC paperwork package. If you don't accept your NROTC scholarship by the deadline, you will lose it for sure.

You will absolutely lose the NROTC scholarship if you wait until you hear from USNA, which may be any day up until I-Day (in theory).

My son is also playing the USNA waiting game, he accepted his NROTC Scholarship immediately and has his NSI slot for the 2nd Block. Only thing he has to do is move his scholarship since the financial aid package from the school he was placed at was less than stellar (Ivy vs State school).

Got it. Your best 2nd choice is FFS scholarship, that is accepted. I understand.

Your NROTC scholarship is not binding, BTW. Your prep acceptance may have contractual obligations, as you stated. I’m not familiar with that.

Sounds like you are in a good place.

According to a post I read somewhere, @GWU PNS (emeritus) (if I remember correctly), the scholarship, if declined, will go to another applicant up to a certain point. After that date, its thrown into the ‘college programmer side load’ bucket, to go to a deserving college programmer.
