USNA Class of 2028 Waiting and Speculating

The Portal updated at Midnight last night:
Fully Qualified Offer of Appointment !!
Revisiting one of the 3 big Ivies today with an NROTC Scholarship offer. DS is on the fence.
I’m still rooting for USNA (and trying to keep my mouth shut) but I think the allure of the Ivies may win out.
Believe it or not, he says the civilian schools have shown more love and he wants to go where he’s wanted. If this offer came in a month ago, I think he’d have already committed to USNA.
These are champagne problems.
Good luck to everyone out there still Pending.
Congrats!

A separate question, when the USNA candidates who have been confirmed appointment and accepted will receive any kind of official physical mail like BFE or Permit To Report packet.

What size are these high schools that they have 3 & 4 kids a year appointed. There have been four in our senators district in six years. That’s unreal to me.
Our DS who had 9 Appointments to SAs graduated with 700 kids. I think all but one of the 9 were military kids with dads who were going on 20 years. However, my DS received his Appointment off of a Florida Congressman even though he also had the Presidential. The academy still used the Congressman for the Appointment.

Once offer of appointment is official, there’ll indeed be a couple mailings: One is the USNA memento, a nice folder enclosing a certificate of appointment. One is the PTR, with plenty of instructions and paperwork. The folder is nice, but the PTR is more important. Get going on it right away, as it can be time-consuming, especially amid all the other tasks as one approaches graduation and launch.

Approximately 1,200 admitted per year. Of those approximately 200 are NAPS and about 20 are directly from the Fleet or Corps. And the internationals, approx 15. So, 1,200-235 = 965 slots competed for?
Don't forget Foundation, which I think is about 30-40, reapplicants around another 100+ and then you have all your Blue Chip candidates. I know Mids who were tapped for their sport and considered a Blue Chip candidate when they were sophomores and juniors in high school. I even know one athlete who was tapped in 8th grade for his sport, went to a private high school to play his sport and was sponsored by an alum from that private school so he didn't have to pay the $60,000 tuition and then the school is able to say USNA recruits from their private high school. There is so much background we as parents have no idea about it. So as not to get myself all wrapped up in the details I have to just trust God will send my kid where He wants him.

Had your portal changed from pending to pcr prior to appt?

I can see how it might seem the SAs are “antiquated,” but it’s not apples to apples comparison with a civilian college.

For four of the five SAs, there is the U.S. Code-directed nominations process that has to be matrixed in. Add in the DoDMERB medical evaluation and waiver process, and a CFA test, and the process as a whole is multiple times more complex than completing an application for a civilian school. The SAs are not just evaluating people for acceptance into a college degree program, but their fitness for serving, leading and being accountable and responsible for people, mission and things for at least 5 years on active duty in the Navy - so the admissions process is also an employment interview.

For the sake of the enlisted personnel they will one day lead and the 24/7/365 commitment they are making, including going in harm’s way, I think the SA Admissions approach this massive annual task with commitment, accumulated wisdom and a desire to look at each and every candidate with a 360 perspective, fairly. That takes awhile. And as the cycle draws down, there are always last-minute adjustments.
I agree. It's a massive undertaking, for both applicants and admissions, unlike anything I've encountered in the civilian world. The earlier you can accept and roll with the differences, the better you can adapt and progress through the process. As a Navy brat, I had some inkling of what to expect. My wife was astounded. I drove home the point that this is *Not College. Embrace it and you will get more comfortable.

Curious how many spots may be left to be filled. I am aware there is no real way to know, just a question that keeps coming into my head.
You've answered your own question. 😉

Thank you. Our DS has received the appointment in late march, has accepted it on the Portal. Although we have not received any physical official letter or PTR. So was trying to confirm when should we receive it.

Although DS declined, I would hope we still get his appointment letter in the pretty jacket!

They are exposed to everything the Academy has to offer before they make a decision, they are encouraged to talk to advisors and upperclassmen in any of the carrer paths
That’s one of the coolest things they offer
Yes, but the mids do not get to “make a decision”. Majors are assigned to meet specific program numbers and not everyone gets what they wanted.
