USNA I got declined???

I just had this phone call with the NROTC Marine Option person. He said he got a list of applicants that applied for the Naval Academy and weren't accepted for an appointment for the Naval Academy. I haven't gotten any email directly from the Naval Academy saying I haven't been accepted, but I don't know what to think of the phone call.
This was an error in messaging. The NROTC Marine Option Coordinators receive the list of students who applied to USNA within their respective areas who indicated an interest in pursuing an NROTC Scholarship, nothing more. Don't worry- you will not hear about your non-select status from a NROTC Coordinator.

Could be a scam to get you to join NROTC

No scam intended at all. The MO NROTC Coordinators take the list of students they receive and contact them to inform students about NROTC. You would be surprised how many students are unaware of the scholarship application requirements or the benefits. We absolutely do not advise candidates not to apply to the Academies, but rather to expand their options and apply for the scholarship as well. Applying for and being offered a scholarship does not preclude you from Academy acceptance.

Let me be blunt as well- as a Marine, and an Officer, I have zero interest or appetite for a candidate who only wants to serve as an officer if they get to attend an Academy. Soldiers, Sailors, Marines, and Airmen deserve better. Obviously, everyone should pursue their dreams to the fullest, and if attending an Academy is one of them, put your soul into that. But you should ultimately want to serve your nation as an officer above all else. There are numerous routes to a commission, and the goal should be service and leadership, not a class ring.

thanks, your explanation was very meaningful

When our daughter was doing her NROTC scholarship application back in 2018, I believe she asked me & DW about a preferred Branch question — Navy or Marine Corps. I think it’s a question or checkbox or whatever on the application ... I am not sure what she selected.

Anyway, when she was at NAPS last year, she established a really great mentoring relationship with the XO of the NAPS program who is a career Marine Corp Officer, and from his mentorship, she is now leaning Marine Corp Ground. I haven’t asked her recently though, since transitioning to the USNA this year as a plebe class of 2024.

Be interesting to see what she finally decides on or gets picked for when she graduates in 3+ years .... It’s all good

First, thank you for the clarification and update. Second, discussion of NROTC and other Officer programs is, or is supposed to be, part of every BGO interview. I agree wit the sentiment --the commitment to service is critical for Service Academy applicants, and ignoring NROTC or other officer programs suggests the applicant is less committed to serving and /or has other motivations.

It is not uncommon for Midshipmen to change their service selection several times during their time at USNA. One of the benefits of USNA over the other Service Academies is the variety of Service Selection Opportunities -- you can do anything out of USNA that you can do out of USMA and USAFA, plus more. (Even Navy's Army has an Air Force!). Midshipmen get exposed to all of the major Warfare Communities during cruise and /or Protramid, and all communities have representatives in the Yard, I

Recommend you forward to USNA Admission Counselor, and ask them about legitimacy -- If they think its a concern, they will take appropriate action.
My DD got an email from NROTC - not sure if it was part of the same message others received? She hasn’t heard directly from USNA but she did hear from her teachers who said it was EXTREMELY difficult and confusing to submit their LORs . I know they are having tech issues with their new systems, but it’s all very frustrating for applicants and their families because you just don’t know what’s real and what’s tech issues

Bravo Zulu, @Recruiting Station XO

> This isn't a competition between the Service Academies and ROTC, or even among the various branches of the Service. We all have a common objective to ensure that well qualified Men and Women are aware of opportunities to serve as an officer in our Armed Forces. I avoid the word "recruit" deliberately -- I'm not looking to convince anyone to go to USNA ; the motivation and desire to serve has to come from within. I have no problem with candidates who are applying for other Service Academies, and encourage candidates to explore NROTC if they haven't already applied.

If they are applying for the Marine Option Program, I STRONGLY advise your DD to provide a hard copy for the evaluators to complete. The NETFOCUS website is notoriously unreliable, and a hard copy is just as fine as the electronic.

First. It is way to early, particularly this year, to be thinking that USNA has made any final decisions on Candidates. Second, as CAPT MJ notes, there is a tandard process for notification , and this is WAY OUTSIDE that.

I am usually pretty understanding and forgiving, but have a hard time accepting this "NROTC Marine Option person's" action. Is this an Officer recruiter? If so, I am a bit skeptical that they would have a list of USNA applicants at all (particularly this year -- the BGIS system isn't even fully functional yet), and expect it is highly unlikely that they would ever receive a list of USNA turn downs. Further, no one but USNA should be notifying a candidate of their turn down status. I think the Recruiter's action was inappropriate at best, and the "oops, I made a mistake but didn't have time to call" response after he was called on it suggests something more nefarious.

I recommend that anyone getting a call that states or suggests that they weren't admitted to USNA without receiving official notice from Admissions email their Admissions Counselor, with a cc: to the BGO, including details of the call (including the identify of the recruiter and contact information if possible).
I believe it was a Marine SSgt recruiter for the NROTC Marine Option. My BGO had contacted him and I already notified my admission counselor.

She’s not applying for either. She applied to the academy.

DS received a similar email - congrats on your commitment to serve, please consider NROTC, it's a very challenging year to be in front of HS students so please show your commitment to serve by posting a QR code on your social media to help get the NROTC word out. It seemed like a very thoughtful approach and a bit of a gut-check for candidates to see how seriously they take their commitment to serve and build the armed forces

I just spoke with two young men yesterday, both freshmen in high school. They both said the military was going to pay for their college. I asked about which branch they wanted to serve in, MOS questions, things of that nature. Both have great grades and are smart and apply themselves. They only knew about the GI Bill, neither had any clue about the various ROTC scholarships. One wants to become a nurse, I mentioned he should do a deep dive on NROTC nursing option. I am always amazed how many kids and parents have no idea these options are out there. If one wants to serve, and be a leader, they are great options.

Our son didn’t answer an unknown number. It was the senator calling to inform of principal nomination. Senator’s staff then reached out to the school. Also, make sure your kiddo has a professional voice mail set up.
DS just received a call today from unknown number with 202 area code (Washington DC)...one of our Senator’s staff offered a nomination to USNA. Of course he accepted. 👍
