I just had this phone call with the NROTC Marine Option person. He said he got a list of applicants that applied for the Naval Academy and weren't accepted for an appointment for the Naval Academy. I haven't gotten any email directly from the Naval Academy saying I haven't been accepted, but I don't know what to think of the phone call.

Have you completed your application with USNA? As in, they have everything they need to see to determine if you are fully qualified? Noms don’t signify, this is all about whether the SA finds you a qualified candidate. You could have 5 noms, and if you are not found qualified - this year - you won’t get an offer.

I think this is worth a call to Admissions and an official source, letting them know you received this call and understand there are standard procedures in place as well as a timeline, but is there anything appropriate they could share with you at this stage? Normally, I counsel people to await official updates, but you have been contacted by another official program with this assertion.

At some point, everyone gets a final decision in the next several months, with portal updates on various outcomes, including the “TWE” Thin White Envelope or electronic version of a declination. It seems to me ROTC programs sometimes get names they often contact about their program even if the school hadn’t been applied to, but it is after the New Year.

Take a deep breath, but verify. Roll with this, if it is indeed a “no” - this year - then you are in great shape to pursue NROTC at a school that feels right to you, and you can decide about USNA re-application a few steps further down the road.

And - don’t overlook one scenario - you might not be on an interior direct appointment list, could be under consideration for Naval Academy Prep School or Foundation prep scholarship.

Step at a time. No rash moves. Keep all options open. Head up.

I don't have a complete check mark on my medical and nomination. I have completed DODMERB and qualified, but it is not marked as complete on my portal. Also my portal doesn't signify that I have been declined and I have not received TWE. I have emailed my admissions counselor already and I am waiting for a response. I already am applying for AFROTC scholarship as well as a back plan. I just thought it was confusing because I thought I would hear back from the USNA about my application before a recruiter for the Marine Option Scholarship for NROTC.

DD received an email from a Marine Corp Capt recruiting her to consider NROTC since USNA is such a competitive institution to get accepted. I don't think she has been called, but doubtful she would answer a call not in her contacts.

There is an immense amount of pressure placed on recruiters. Or at least there was in the past. Years ago I had beers with some Army customers that were former recruiters. The held the floor telling story after story of the things Sr Enlisted would do to them for not performing/getting in the proper amount of recruits. Maybe you "misheard" Maybe the recruiter made a statement about how difficult is to get an appointment. I'm with CaptMJ, as usual, relax and contact an official source. My guess is you have not been declined. They just have your info since USNA is sharing it with NROTC recruiting offices. Good luck on your appointment!

Thanks for the information. As soon as I heard him, I asked him again to double check and he said he got a list. I don't know if he misunderstood the list because he said he got a list of people that weren't accepted and not a list of people who were declined.

DD may want to assess her phone-answering criteria for a temporary period. Elected officials often like to call and surprise the candidate.

My guess and only a guess, it's a list of all applicants. The email my DD showed me went it how difficult it has been to recruit this year due to CDC guidelines and lack of in person recruiting at high schools and other places. Again, just a guess, but guessing due to current situation, Big Navy is doing all they can to recruit requisite number of future officers. This may happen every year, but I don't recall this contact when my oldest DD went through the process.

🤞 you read my mind. I was going to have that convo tonight or tomorrow.

It ain't over till it's over. Keep your head up, keep your options open, but don't give up the fight until after the class of 2025 actually reports on I-Day.

Are you also applying to NROTC? Assuming USNA is plan “A”, NROTC is a very good plan “B”! And gives you another nominating source next year should an appointment not be offered this year.

I remember with my older older son, that it was a new thing that Army received lists of contacts and was reaching out to applicants (USNA). Even through MOC’s. I haven’t heard discussion about that in recent years. Recruiting initiatives seem to ebb and flow a bit, and aren’t always “standard”, which is normal in industry as well.

I think it’s encouraging! And will perhaps get applicants to think of different ways to commission than they hadn’t thought of. I would sure advise my own to go for it! More options for you, when the time comes (hopefully).

I’m sure it was startling to hear that “TWE” stuff. I don’t see how they could have that info at this point, especially if you are a competitive candidate. The only thing I can see as a potential is if they are actually receiving their ”list” from your local MOC’s (vs USNA) and you have not received any nominations from them. But keep in mind, even without a MOC nom, it’s not 100pct over. As there are still other sources (IE: VP nom). POINT IS....it’s NOT over until USNA tells you it’s over. Period. My youngest thought it was over and he ended up being one of the last, off the NWL, late May. It happens!!

This really could be a simple misrepresentation, misunderstanding, misspeaking on the part of that recruiter. But Inquiring of USNA directly is certainly justified as NROTC MO has opened up that conversation.

Good luck!

Our son didn’t answer an unknown number. It was the senator calling to inform of principal nomination. Senator’s staff then reached out to the school. Also, make sure your kiddo has a professional voice mail set up.

yup i got a call as well a few days ago from a NROTC officer. He told me since I didn't make it into USNA I could look at NROTC as an option. I immediately freaked out and checked the application portal. No message yet. Not sure what to make of this lol.

UPDATE: I just found out that the recruiter was mistaken. My BGO contacted him and said he had been corrected, but didn't have time to contact me. I just find it very disappointing that the NROTC recruiter for the Marines would not be willing to call back and correct his mistake. I understand he has a busy schedule, but I would have at least wanted to hear back.

I think you are good and you still have an opportunity. I would just double check with an admissions counselor or BGO.

First. It is way to early, particularly this year, to be thinking that USNA has made any final decisions on Candidates. Second, as CAPT MJ notes, there is a tandard process for notification , and this is WAY OUTSIDE that.

I am usually pretty understanding and forgiving, but have a hard time accepting this "NROTC Marine Option person's" action. Is this an Officer recruiter? If so, I am a bit skeptical that they would have a list of USNA applicants at all (particularly this year -- the BGIS system isn't even fully functional yet), and expect it is highly unlikely that they would ever receive a list of USNA turn downs. Further, no one but USNA should be notifying a candidate of their turn down status. I think the Recruiter's action was inappropriate at best, and the "oops, I made a mistake but didn't have time to call" response after he was called on it suggests something more nefarious.

I recommend that anyone getting a call that states or suggests that they weren't admitted to USNA without receiving official notice from Admissions email their Admissions Counselor, with a cc: to the BGO, including details of the call (including the identify of the recruiter and contact information if possible).

I received an email and saved it. I didn't get a call. It doesn't say I wasn't admitted and wasn't from USNA so I ignored it. Do you want to see it? I could send it to you privately.

Recommend you forward to USNA Admission Counselor, and ask them about legitimacy -- If they think its a concern, they will take appropriate action.
