Hello all,
I am a rising sophomore and I previously applied for Summer STEM at the Naval Academy. I did not get into the summer STEM program; however, I just received an email notifying me that I am invited for a day of STEM at USNA on August 27th. Does everybody who applies and get rejected for Summer STEM receive this email or only a select few? I am trying to decide if I am going to attend. I would love to, but money is tight for my family and airline prices are going up. It would also be a long trip from South Dakota for one day. Thank you for your consideration at answering this question!

Reach out to USNA Admissions via the Chat widget. Tell them that you are in need of financial help to attend-they will help if they can. Also ask your other question. When you get into the Chat ask for a Private Chat Room to keep your conversation private. I don't know if they have $ for this...but I would definitely ask. Do this ASAP.

As a rising sophomore I would probably not spend the money to travel for one day. Dinner you are from SD, It is likely you will be selected for summer stem or summer seminar next year as a rising junior. Then you spend your money on that visit which is longer and more enriching. Unless of course Navy will pay for you two travel to this summers event then you take it.

Hi
I am in the same situation as the student at the top of the discussion. I was denied the invitation to the Summer STEM program but then received the email today about the day of STEM at the Academy. What exactly is this? Who receives it? And how much does it cost?
thanks for any additional info.

Hi there! I was also invited under the same circumstances and have many of the same questions as you. I emailed stemondeck@gmail.com with some questions. I was wondering if anyone has heard anything about the selectiveness of this event?

Hi! I also was invited today, if you look on the USNA website under STEM on deck, I think they mentioned of only 55 students being chosen per 3 sessions so I'm assuming it is very selective. Please let me know otherwise!

I also read this, but it seemed that it was from 2020 when they were doing virtual sessions. To my knowledge, this event is actually at the academy. Maybe it is the same thing, just not virtual this time. It was very different back in 2020 times.

If you could, I would really appreciate if I could see what they reply to you! If you could put it on this thread that would be great.

Hey everyone,
I heard back from STEM on deck and all they said was that check in would start at 0745 on 27 August and the event would end around 1600 that same day. They said a confirmation email would be sent out to everyone who RSVP'd that would answer my other questions. Hope this helps!

this is the reply I got:

Good evening,

This program is separate from the Summer STEM event and is an opportunity for those that were declined to participate in the STEM on Deck program that is happening on 27 August. There are a total of 250 spots available and we hope that being declined initially for Summer STEM doesn't deter you from potentially participating in the STEM on Deck program! If you decide to participate, there will be a confirmation email sent with further details and information about the program.

Please reach out if you have any further questions.

Very Respectfully,
The USNA STEM Team

That's what I'm thinking... I live moderately close (in state) and I'm still not sure it's worth the drive 🤷‍♂️ I could hardly imagine flying...

I would definitely encourage attending especially if you live close. Personally I think being chosen out of 250 is still an accomplishment given the amount of people that apply to the actual summer stem program which I heard was over 10,000 and to go its also expensive. But, this is a free experience they are providing to interact with Midshipman and view the campus. Also, don't forgot that means your name and resume are being kept by the Admissions office and if you do plan on applying in the future they will already have your file. This is definitely an experience worth taking in my opinion because it just sounds like they didn't want to let go of the students they see potential in.

Very tough decision, especially for those who live more than a few hours drive away. Always nice to have the opportunity to visit the Yard, see some inner workings and interact with mids. At the same time, it can be very expensive. For those leaning against attending, know this: USNA makes it very clear that attending STEM or NASS — or not — has zero bearing on whether one is offered appointment. The experience can help one decide whether to apply and/or attend, but it gives no one a leg up — or a leg down. As outreach programs, STEM and NASS are about awareness and recruitment, not screening or assessment.

Also consider that you could inquire about a candidate visit weekend. They have occurred in the past.

A visit to any school you are considering is a plus. Doesn’t mean it has to happen on one particular day.
