Every year my high school holds an award ceremony for the seniors to honor their accomplishments, and they’re wondering the approximate dollar value for my appointment. If anyone has a good idea, it would be much appreciated! :)

Not sure about USMMA, but USMA usually quotes about $250,000. I would assume USMMA would be in the same ballpark, but defer to those with more specific knowledge.

Sometimes that number goes up or down as the academies weigh the value of impressing an audience vs. shocking a taxpayer.

Same for USMMA. They actually do say $250,000 in their literature. You will earn every penny, though, in how hard you work to get in and everything you have to do while you are there.

I know that along with the appointment, there is a blurb that outlines USMMA and is meant to be something which can be read at graduation/award ceremonies. I'll look and see if I can find the one from 2021 and post it here.

You seem to know so much about everything that happens at usmma. I would've thought you were an alum.

Just a well-informed mom of two Kings Pointers trying to help out here...

Here is the official presentation script from USMMA:

Certificate Presentation

The United States Merchant Marine Academy, located at Kings Point, New York (on the north shore of Long Island), is one of the five (5) Federal Academies.

Nominated by (List nomination source), (Name of appointee) is one of approximately 275 appointees selected to attend the academy from around the nation and the world, out of over 2,500 applicants.

Completion of the intensive four (4) year regimental and academic curriculum, which includes three (3) trimesters at sea on U.S. Flag Merchant vessels and U.S. Navy ships, as well as an Internship, leads to a Bachelor of Science Degree, a U.S. Merchant Marine Officer’s License as either a Deck Officer or Engineering Officer, and an Ensign’s commission in the U.S. Navy Reserve.

An Appointment to the Academy is the equivalent of a scholarship worth approximately $250,000 over the 4-year period.

This remarkable achievement reflects great credit on (name here), and demonstrates that he/she is already living up to the Academy’s motto “Acta non Verba” – Deeds, not Words.

I take great pleasure, and consider it a high honor, on behalf of Rear Admiral James A. Helis, Superintendent, to recognize the Appointment of (name here) to the United States Merchant Marine Academy Class of 2022.

Congratulations, and “Well Done”!

Moms know everything....don't you know?
I know more about the SA my husband graduated from than he does and he was on the admissions board for 5 years and is a professor there now. I was actually a tour guide for the academy. I know even more now that I've been through the admissions process with my DS. Don't have to actually go there to know about it;-)
