So, my best friend and I (both of us are applying) would like to visit the academy sometime in December. However, I'm worried that the cadets will have left for winter leave during that time, so I was just wondering when the best time to go would be.

Also, how does visiting work? Do we stay in a dorm with a cadet overnight, rent a hotel room, or some other setup?

Thanks.

Come before the 12th, thats when finals start. Im not sure if you can stay overnight but you usually meet the cadet in the morning and go to their classes and leave around 4.

You need to contact either your ALO or the PA folks at USAFA to arrange anything.

Several years ago when my D was applying we called admissions and they arranged it. However, there are/were very specific days of the week (I don't remember which) and back then she was told she could not go into the cadet area if she went from Thanksgiving - Christmas as they don't/didn't allow such visits because the cadets were leading up to finals/in finals. You can call admissions and find out if there are still restrictions on visits.

From the academy website:

Tour Schedule:
The tour begins at 8:45 a.m. at Arnold Hall where students and accompanying family members will meet an Admissions representative who will escort all attendees to a location where a one-hour admissions briefing is given to everyone. At 10:15 a.m., students will be paired up with a cadet to “shadow” until 4:00 p.m. The students will attend classes, visit the dorms, tour the athletic facilities, and have lunch in the cadet dining hall (for which there is a $6.00 fee, exact change is appreciated).

Also at 10:15 a.m., the family members are taken on a separate tour which will last approximately one hour. Upon completion of this tour, family members can take part in an optional Cadet Chapel tour. Family members are then directed to places that are open to the public that they may visit until the students return at 4:00 p.m. Family members will meet the students in the afternoon at Arnold Hall. Dress for the tour is business casual with comfortable walking shoes.

Tours begin 20 Aug 2009 and end 7 May 2010

I bolded the dates around Christmas - looks like all of December is out! We've had that problem the last few years when trying to arrange a visit in conjunction with our spring break here (and hopefully some skiing) since it seems our break is March is always the same week as theirs!

I did find it interesting that I also found the (tentative!) dates for Appointee Orientation! :thumb: Thanks for getting me to look!!

Okay, I can't figure out how to edit my last post. Here is additional information, which should have come first:

Academic Year
We conduct prospective candidate tours for high school students on Mondays, Thursdays, and Fridays during the academic year except for holidays and final exam/training event periods. There are several dates during the fall and spring semesters during which no tours are scheduled; please contact the Academy for more information.

Yeah, no one would want to host you anyway the week before finals... no offence.

lol, I don't blame you. Probably have enough on your hands to keep you busy without giving tours also. I want to wait a little longer before I try and get a tour, but when I do (excluding finals week) I will try and request you.

Later,

Brian
