My son was just notified again he is on the waitlist! I'm not sure what it takes or who he needs to rub elbows with as he is an outstanding student, physically fit etc. I know we are from a competitive area but they need to stop and look at his dedication to becoming a MERCHANT MARINE and not if he was a Captain to a sport to fill spots for athletes that seem to drop out when they can't make it academically or not really knowing what they want in life. Congrats to the ones that have received an appointment and hopeful to all the ones that are in the same boat as my son.

What state are you representing?

I take it your son is now a freshman in college? I’m a HS senior, I received the “Hold” status email today saying I’m on the National wait list. KP is my #1 choice also, my back up plans are ROTC, I have a 3yr AROTC offer in hand. Now that the KP application window is closed, it will be interesting to see how fast they pull people off the HOLD list and give them offers. Clearly, some offers come the week before indoc as people bail out/get a better offer/change their mind last minute. I’m taking my ACT one more time to raise my score as high as possible. Seems if you make it to “HOLD” status, your odds are pretty good to at least get an offer. Last year 582 qualified with 420 offers?

I am so sorry you are frustrated. Our DS has an application in and hasn't heard yet either, so we wait. I think it is a good sign to get on the wait list, means you are a qualified candidate and you are in the pool. Now the wait for appointments to start being sent out. Stay tough and I will keep my fingers crossed for your DS.

Fingers crossed here too ... My dd's app is still app on file ... she is waiting for her medical waivers to be approved.

lots of bad assumptions and frustration here. Realize this, athletics aren't as big a factor as you think. You don't need to rub elbows with anybody. Nobody gets admitted to USMMA who can't make it academically. Some choose not to.

How does USMMA notify you of an appointment? BFE, call, e-mail or portal update? Which order?

The order depends on where you live. They will give your MOC a chance to notify you first. Then portal/BFE happens. If you live close to Kings Point, you will likely get BFE first. If you live farther away, you will probably see portal update before you receive BFE. Good luck!

DS was informed today that he is now in a HOLD status as well. I see this as a good thing -- you are still in the game and are actually into the final round of consideration. As I have read through threads containing HOLD in the USMMA forum, I conclude that this is the USMMA equivalent of 3Q and you can have a seat on the bus if there is room (so to speak). If we look at the class profiles for prior year groups, would the "MET SELECTION CRITERIA" line item referenced (https://www.usmma.edu/class-profile) equate to HOLD status? If so, it would appear that you have a greater than 70% chance of receiving an offer of appointment. Do others read it the same way?

And the process never seems to completely be predictable. Our DS's app was 'app on file' until the day it went to offer of appointment screen. Never did get advised he was in hold status or have 'hold' listed in his portal.

And @shiner I read it the same way you do. :)

My DS was on hold last year all way through May, applied again this year and was put on Hold right after the window closed. Heart wrenching when this is his first choice.

The academy needs to keep the number of appointments to 350 and DECREASE THE CLASS SIZE. THE INDUSTRY IS GETTING SMALLER NOT BIGGER. If your son or daughter is in the class of 2024 I would be very hopeful that the military isn't drawing down in 2024 because sailing as a 3/M or 3/AE is going to be even worse than it is today. Very few shoreside jobs in the sector you can do straight out of college, and fewer even that MARAD will let you do. USMMA used to be a sure bet but its not anymore.

Despite the negativity of Mr2020, my DD already has three firm job offers as a class of 2021 third mate. Perhaps the likelihood of getting job offers depends on ability, work ethic, and personality as demonstrated during sea year ship assignments. Take heart that the prospects for most mids are still very bright. I have not heard anywhere that this year's number of offers is going to be reduced. Everyone on HOLD hang in there. HOLD indicates that you have a good chance of receiving an offer of appointment. You will have an answer soon.

This is false and misleading and impossible. No such thing as a firm job offer over 1 year before you’re able to work. When a company has a need for a 3/M they fill it. NOBODY is going to wait around 1.5 years to fill a 3/M job. First of all it isn’t possible with MM&P. It’s barely possible with AMO and the non-union tanker operators. Hundreds of new 3/Ms are going to hit the market with an equal or superior skillset in a matter of months. This is just delusion.

valedictorian of my class with a 3.9+ GPA finished with 0 offers before going with a tanker company.

How do you get the number of 350 Appointments? And what makes you think it’s going to be 350 this year?

350 is the Appointments Offered
Class size for the last 4 years is approximately 280
Which means 70 applicants did not accept an Appointment

My class (19) was 260. 2021 had 279. 1 person just no showed to Indoc without telling them he wasn't gonna show.
