How long does it take USAFA to make a decision on a waiver request? The last of the information that they requested was received by dodmerb on February 5th. Also is there anything I can do if they don’t grant me a waiver? Thanks:)

My son has been waiting since dec 2 to see if they will request a waiver. It is our understanding they will request a waiver only if they determine the candidate is competitive enough. Assuming that will all shuffle out soon since the nominations were just due January 31. Good luck!

It could take days or it could take weeks or months. Patience.

If it takes up to a few months how would I receive an appointment? I thought in order to be accepted you had to be medically qualified

You must be medically qualified to be considered for an appointment so hopefully, your waiver comes in time.

It took about 22 calendar days (including Christmas and the the new year) for my DD's medical waiver to complete. Her ALO told her that they only made request if you're competitive. So I guess you just submit what ever documents they need and wait. Good luck to your application!

Mine took about a month. They just asked for medical records and bam.

Usafah, may I ask you approximately how long did it take before you received your appointment, after you had been cleared medically? Thanks!

20 days!
I received my medical waiver on 1/11 and my appointment letter on 1/31.

Congratulations to you...guess he has a little more waiting at this point, thanks and again, congratulations!

You're welcome and thank you! Good luck to your son! And tell him not to stress too much!

It is just impossible to say. My DD received a waiver in less than a week but her appointment came 13 months later in the next class.

USMA 1994... do you mean that the waiver came in too late (April or May) so they offered her an appointment for the following year without reapplying?

Nope, She was granted a waiver in early January but did not receive an appointment that year. She had to re-apply and the waiver was still good the next year.

The point of my post is that there is no way to tell how long it may take.

For those concerned about receiving a waiver prior to March. The admissions website says: "If you don't receive an early notification, you will be considered in March if your records are complete and you meet all of our admissions requirements. If we don't yet have your medical clearance or your preparatory school or college transcript, you will be considered for a conditional appointment. If you are selected, your final appointment will depend on your medical qualifications..." https://www.academyadmissions.com/what-to-expect/before-the-academy/as-an-appointee/

I've heard DODMERB often waits to review waiver requests to save resources (no need to process waivers for students that aren't admitted). So, I'd guess it's a good sign when a waiver request is granted--but don't worry too much if the waiver isn't granted by mid-March. I'm a newbie, so please correct me if I'm off. I hope this helps others!

A LOT of waivers may take until mid-March, when the bulk of appointments come out. The USAFA could be waiting to see what other candidates they have; sizing each up to the other...if they get amazing kids that exceed that of a candidate needing a waiver...you do the math.

So, as lousy as it sounds/feels/seems...a wait is in order...

Just a technically, it isn't DoDMERB that waits to review the waiver requests ... It is the SA medical waiver authority, in this case the USAFA Surgeon General ...
