Washington Post Article about Army ROTC and Virginia Tech

Interesting article, but it did make question exactly what I was thinking:

“I’d like to know what the Army is going to do with all of these people, because the Army is shrinking,” said Michael E. O’Hanlon, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution who specializes in U.S. defense strategy.

What are they going to do, will they follow the NROTC or AFROTC program where the end of their soph yr., will it become a make of break yr?

Maybe their manpower goals see that in 4 yrs from now many will be leaving at a higher rate than they have in the past few yrs.

One Example

Doesn't really matter how many show up but how many continue. DS AROTC figures were something like 70 people show up, cut to 45 after first PT and were made aware that only about half of those will be able to continue past sophomore year. So yes it seems they will somewhat follow the example of other branches.

Interesting. Wish they had expanded on this comment though:
Meanwhile, the number of commissions from the Navy and Marine Corps ROTC has increased, but enrollment is steadily dropping.
I expect it's because they manage the numbers of ROTC students based on their manpower needs since they don't have the "safety" valve of the reserves. But perhaps there are other factors at work as well.

I think we can debate this every which way from Sunday, but at the end of the day I think a lot of t is about checkbook issues.

No doubt. Both getting through college and having one after.
