West Point Cadets involved with Drugs on Spring Break

A poster in a FB thread today made some mention of the alleged side affects of the drug coming from CPR being false. I sure hope not. It’s been incredibly quiet since it happened. My thoughts are with those affected and the cadet who was still hospitalized.

Bad decisions don’t mean you are a bad person or irredeemable.

Since UCMJ action may be invoked the COC needs to keep quiet to prevent possible command influence.

My mom heart just wanted to know they were all walking and talking and okay. What happens to them from an adjudication standpoint is entirely another matter.
My mama heart was hoping they all recovered and their families had their sons and daughters back. Regardless of the outcome of separation status.

That is great news, and I must admit, shocking to me. In my complete ignorance of the medical world, hearing one was on a ventilator for over a week led me to believe recovery would be difficult. Glad I was wrong. (and/or that the reports were to begin with)

When cadets get separated do they complete an academic period? Or, is it when ever separation is decided, they are sent home?

When the service secretary approves and out processing is complete.

Now, if it’s involuntary, perhaps for medical reasons, finishing out the semester so as to have completed clssses on a transcript, might well happen. Conduct or honor? Not likely.

Actually, no, when you are done, you are done. You don't get to finish the term. You are out-processing until you are done out-processing and it always takes longer than you think.

Great news.

The U.S. Military Academy confirmed on March 23 that all cadets had been released from the hospital, but offered no other information except that the incident remains under investigation.

And now, the rest of the story.

In using a controlled substance as a West Point cadet, however, they are likely to get disenrolled, the term for expulsion in a military college. Greg T. Rinckey, a former Army Judge Advocate General (JAG) and founding attorney of the Albany law firm Tully Rinckey PLLC that specializes in military law, has represented several military students, including separate cases of West Point cadets who faced disenrollment for drug charges.

If it can be proven that the cadets knowingly ingested the drugs, he said, they would not only be disenrolled but could also be criminally charged for wrongful use, or possession of, a controlled substance and be required to pay back tuition. The total bill could amount to a whopping $150,000 to $200,000 per cadet — unless they are freshman, which is considered a kind of grace period to test young cadets’ dedication to service.
