It means you remain in the running. Still lots of appointments to go. It is coming to the time where some appointees will decline their appointments freeing up additional spots for those on hold. Stand by and good

They can take 10 to fill up the state. But, State B only has 2 applicants that meet requirements. They can then take the 2 qualified from State A and fill in the spots left open in State B. There are a number of states that do not fill their spots. Some states have more than their number. So what to do now, besides wait. Keep an open dialogue with your admissions counselor, and, any others you may have had contact with at the school. Keep an open dialogue with the coach if there is one in the picture. They can help with information on the process and possibly progress.”

USMMA is required (by law) to offer admission to applicants based on their ranked order-of-merit by State. As candidate files are evaluated, some (whose overall standing is VERY high) are offered admission early-on, the majority, however, are placed in a "hold" status. Those candidates then wait until all applications are evaluated and rank-ordered. In the beginning of April when admissions have all completed files reviewed and sequenced, they make offers to fill the State quotas and then move to the National Waiting list. Hope this explanation helps. "Hold" status is a good thing and shows that your package was reviewed and found worthy to be competitive against others in your state....now they just have to review everyone else in your state and rank them before offers are made.

Thank you so much. I was feeling kinda worried about it because the other descriptions I've seen about hold weren't as detailed as this! By chance, does anyone know how competitive AZ generally is for USMMA?
 
The most competitive states are those on the coasts where the shipping industry has a presence. So I assume Arizona is less competitive. Good luck!

There are 7 plebes from Arizona in the Class of 2021 and I believe this was the most from AZ in a long time. It is a great state to apply from as, like @kpmom2013 says, the coastal states are the most competitive. Best of luck and if you receive and accept an appointment, make sure to come to the Welcome Aboard event in early June and for the parents to join the AZ USMMA Parent and Alumni group. It is a terrific group of supportive parents and alumni!

Try to relax and let the process play out. Your app status will continue to change as Admissions ranks and "re-ranks" candidates based on acceptance or rejection of offers. Our DS (from NJ - highly competitive) was HOLD status for a few stress-filled weeks. He's now a proud 2021 Plebe. Once you get that APPOINTMENT, you'll forget all about the stress you're experiencing now. Best of luck!
 
It's good practice for the interminable wait most of you will have sweating it out over your trimester grades to see if you pass that required class. Praying for a D and rejoicing over a C. A new experience for most Plebes who have gotten excellent grades their whole lives. . .
 
It is very easy for me to say no problem. Just hang tight and wait. It is easy now for me that ds is there. When we were in the process it was tough. What we did was start to focus on plan B. On what ifs. Just because we did not know and wanted to have a good feel if the SA's did not come through. Actually we did so much on plan B's that plan B was almost hyped so much that when the appointments for the SA's came through it caused another conversation of the benefits of the SA. Moral of the story.....prepare your ds/dd for all possibilities with a very positive light. That way no matter what happens they will be pumped and encouraged and not think they are not up to spec(so to say) because all of the plan B schools are likely as prestigious as the SA, just in a different way.
